Southern Lebanon’s Only Functioning Hospital Damaged by Israeli Strikes

In the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon, Tibnin Hospital, the region’s only functioning hospital, has sustained significant damage due to recent Israeli airstrikes. Al Jazeera reporter Obaida Hitto has provided a firsthand report from the site, highlighting the critical situation faced by both medical staff and civilians in the area.

Tibnin Hospital has been a vital healthcare facility for southern Lebanon, serving thousands of residents across numerous towns and villages. With most medical centers in the region incapacitated by the conflict, the hospital’s operational status has been crucial for emergency care, treatment of injuries, and routine medical support.

However, the recent strikes have compromised the hospital’s infrastructure, impacting its ability to deliver essential services. Staff members have reported structural damages, disruptions in electricity and water supply, and a shortage of medical supplies—all of which exacerbate the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

The hospital’s damage underscores the challenges faced by healthcare providers in conflict zones, where critical infrastructure is often targeted or caught in crossfire, thereby jeopardizing civilian lives.

Medical teams are working tirelessly under hazardous conditions to continue providing care. Despite the risks, doctors and nurses at Tibnin remain dedicated, treating patients amidst the rubble and limited resources.

Local authorities and international aid organizations have called for immediate ceasefire and protection of medical facilities, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding healthcare access during wartime.

The situation has drawn international attention, with calls for adherence to international humanitarian law, which explicitly prohibits attacks on medical infrastructure.

Civilians in southern Lebanon continue to bear the brunt of the violence, facing displacement, lack of medical care, and deteriorating living conditions. The damage to Tibnin Hospital is emblematic of the broader devastation wrought by the ongoing conflict.

As the conflict persists, the resilience of the hospital staff and the local community remains a beacon of hope, but urgent measures are needed to restore medical services and protect civilian lives.

Al Jazeera’s coverage from Tibnin Hospital offers a vital window into the ground realities in southern Lebanon, highlighting the human cost of the conflict and the urgent need for peaceful resolution and humanitarian support.
