The cricketing community is in mourning following the passing of former England batter Robin Smith, who has died at the age of 62.
Known affectionately as ‘Judge’ throughout his career, Smith was a formidable presence on the international stage. He represented England in 62 Test matches between 1988 and 1996, amassing an impressive 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67, which included nine centuries. Smith also played in 71 One-Day Internationals, where he maintained an average of 39.01.
Born in South Africa, Smith dedicated his entire county cricket career to Hampshire, where he became a revered figure. His final professional appearance for the county was in August 2003. Over a distinguished 22-year first-class career, Smith accumulated 26,155 runs at an average of 41.51.
