A British university student has been missing for more than a week after embarking on a hiking trip in the challenging Bucegi Mountains of Romania. George Smyth, a University of Bristol student originally from Shropshire, has not been seen since November 23, prompting daily search operations by Brașov Mountain Rescue teams.

Smyth is believed to have departed from Poiana Brașov with the intention of reaching Bran, a region renowned for its historic castle associated with Count Dracula. Authorities confirmed that he made an emergency call via the 112 service from Tiganesti before his disappearance. Despite persistent efforts, rescue teams have yet to locate him.

His rugby club in Newport, Shropshire, expressed profound worry regarding his disappearance. A spokesperson for the club stated that Smyth “is a much-loved member of our club” and conveyed that “everyone at the club was deeply concerned to hear that George Smyth has been reported missing while hiking the Bucegi Mountain range in Romania.” The club highlighted his dedication, noting he “often given his time wholeheartedly to help coach our younger age groups” and emphasized, “He has always been part of the Newport rugby family, and this news has touched all of us.” The club is maintaining hope, adding, “As a club and a rugby family, we are holding onto hope that George is found safe and well, and hope that the ongoing search efforts in Romania bring positive news soon,” and requested that he and his family be kept “in their hearts.”

The University of Bristol has confirmed its awareness of the situation. A university spokesperson told Millenium TV, “We’ve been informed that one of our students has been reported missing after independently travelling to Romania to go hiking.” The university voiced its deep concern for Smyth’s welfare and confirmed it is “in close contact with his family,” extending its thoughts to them “as they await any updates.”

Meanwhile, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed its involvement, stating, “We are supporting the family of British man who is missing in Romania and are in contact with the local authorities.” Brașov Mountain Rescue has released Smyth’s photograph at the family’s request, urging anyone with information to contact their service immediately or report to the nearest police station.
