Top Diplomat Marco Rubio Strips Qassem Soleimani’s Niece of US Residency

In a significant diplomatic move, US Senator Marco Rubio has played a pivotal role in the decision to revoke the US residency of Hamideh Soleimani Afshar, the niece of the late Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani. This action is part of a broader effort by the United States to counter Iranian influence and target individuals linked to Iran’s political and military apparatus.

The US State Department issued a formal statement accusing Hamideh Soleimani Afshar of being an ‘outspoken supporter’ of the Iranian regime. The department highlighted her alleged role in promoting government narratives and supporting policies that run counter to US interests and ideals of democracy and human rights.

Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force, was a central figure in Iran’s military strategy and influence in the Middle East until his death in a US drone strike in 2020. His family members have since been under scrutiny by the US government, with many seen as conduits of Iranian policy and ideology.

Rubio, known for his hardline stance against Iran, emphasized that measures like revoking residency aim to cut off resources and influence that undermine regional security and US foreign policy objectives. “This action reflects our commitment to confronting malign Iranian activities and ensuring that those who support such regimes do not enjoy the privileges of US residency,” Rubio stated.

Hamideh Soleimani Afshar had been residing in the United States under a legal residency status before the revocation. The US State Department did not disclose specific evidence against her but noted the decision was taken in line with national security and foreign policy considerations.

This case highlights the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, especially concerning individuals linked to Iran’s military and political leadership. Analysts suggest that targeting family members of prominent figures like Soleimani is part of a broader US strategy to dismantle networks of influence and pressure the Iranian government.

The move has drawn criticism from some human rights advocates who argue that individuals should not be penalized solely based on family ties or political beliefs. However, US officials maintain that such actions are necessary to safeguard national security interests.

The US State Department’s statement also serves as a warning to other individuals in the US who may be supporting foreign regimes inimical to American values and policies. It underscores the administration’s vigilance in monitoring foreign influence within its borders.

Overall, the stripping of US residency from Hamideh Soleimani Afshar marks a notable moment in US-Iran relations, reflecting continued efforts to counteract perceived threats and assert US diplomatic and security priorities in the region.
