PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two days after a deadly shooting at Brown University that claimed the lives of two students and injured nine others, authorities are intensifying their investigation amid mounting questions about campus security and response efforts. The attack occurred amid the university’s busy exam season when a gunman entered a crowded lecture hall in the Barus and Holley building, part of the engineering school, and opened fire.

Authorities initially detained a person of interest but later released him without charges, leaving investigators without significant leads. Law enforcement continues to gather evidence by canvassing local residences and businesses for additional security footage and physical clues to piece together the sequence of events. Frustration has grown among students and community members concerning the effectiveness of the university’s surveillance systems, as well as how quickly the investigation is progressing.

Many students, including those from nearby institutions, have voiced concerns about insufficient security measures and have petitioned for enhanced protections on campus. Li Ding, a student affiliated with both the Rhode Island School of Design and a Brown University dance team, noted that students often support one another more effectively than official law enforcement during crises.

Providence police officials emphasized that the investigation never paused despite setbacks, and the search for the shooter remains active. The FBI has released new images and videos showing the suspect, who was masked during and around the time of the attack. Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks described the painstaking nature of the investigation and announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification and capture of the individual responsible.

Security experts highlight challenges that colleges face with active shooter preparedness, pointing out that campus law enforcement often have limited training and resources compared to municipal agencies. The relationship between campus police and local law enforcement also plays a crucial role in emergency response capabilities.

Additionally, the age and layout of the targeted engineering building—combining older and newer structures—have contributed to the lack of comprehensive camera coverage, complicating efforts to track the gunman’s movements. Residents near campus were also approached by authorities seeking any relevant footage that might aid the investigation.

Students reported receiving alerts about the shooting, yet some found the lockdown instructions confusing. Nearby residents expressed concerns about the city’s recent switch from a mobile alert app to a web-based system, which requires registration and may have limited effective communication during emergencies.

Eyewitness accounts depict chaotic scenes as people ran for safety following the gunfire, and acts of kindness such as bystanders offering aid to victims.

Authorities continue to urge the public to come forward with any information that could help bring resolution to the case, as the investigation remains a top priority for law enforcement and the university community alike.
