Four individuals have been taken into custody following an incident where a display case housing a portion of the Crown Jewels at the historic Tower of London was defaced with custard and apple crumble. The arrests occurred after authorities were alerted shortly before 10:00 GMT on Saturday.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the display containing the Imperial State Crown was targeted. All four individuals were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. As a result of the ongoing police investigation, the Tower’s Jewel House has been temporarily closed to the public.
A group identifying itself as Take Back Power, described as a new non-violent civil-resistance organization, has claimed responsibility for the act. The group stated its intention was to pressure the UK government to establish a permanent citizen’s assembly, which they term a “House of the People,” empowered to “tax extreme wealth and fix Britain.”
Footage reviewed by Millenium TV shows one protester producing a large foil tray of crumble from a bag before forcefully applying it to the glass barrier protecting the Imperial State Crown. Another individual then doused the front of the case with a container of bright yellow custard. “Democracy has crumbled,” one protester exclaimed, while another added, “Britain is broken. We’ve come here to the jewels of the nation to take back power.”
Tourists present at the scene expressed surprise at the sudden demonstration, and a Tower of London staff member was observed communicating via radio during the unfolding events.
