The Formula 1 drivers’ championship is set for a dramatic conclusion this weekend at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit, with three contenders battling for the coveted title. Millenium TV is closely following the action as Lando Norris of McLaren leads Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 12 points, and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by 16 points.
Norris enters the final race as the statistical favorite due to his points advantage. However, Verstappen has secured five victories in the eight races preceding Abu Dhabi, operating with a more straightforward team dynamic compared to the two McLaren drivers vying for the same championship.
While McLaren has consistently fielded the fastest car on average throughout the season, particularly evident in qualifying pace, individual race victories have been evenly distributed among the top three contenders, with Norris, Verstappen, and Piastri each claiming seven wins. Mercedes driver George Russell secured the remaining two victories. McLaren has already sealed the constructors’ championship with six races to spare, a testament to having two highly competitive drivers in a consistently winning vehicle. In contrast, Verstappen has been a near-sole contributor to Red Bull’s points tally, with his teammate offering little support.
The performance characteristics of the cars have varied across different circuits. The McLaren excels in long-duration medium- and high-speed corners, a feature present in Abu Dhabi with the hairpin leading to the first long straight and the extended Turn Nine. However, it is less optimal in short-duration 90-degree corners and heavy braking zones, which are prominent in the final sector around the marina. The Red Bull, on the other hand, boasts superior straight-line speed. This suggests a finely balanced contest based on track characteristics.
Looking at historical performance, Verstappen has a strong record at Abu Dhabi, securing four consecutive victories from 2020 to 2023. This includes a controversial win in 2021 against Lewis Hamilton. While Piastri is in only his third F1 season and Norris has only had a competitive car since 2023, Norris did achieve a dominant victory at Abu Dhabi last year.
The competitive landscape has shifted throughout the season. Norris has displayed remarkable form since the summer break, overcoming a 34-point deficit to Piastri by the end of August. Red Bull experienced a dip in performance mid-season, with Verstappen trailing by 104 points, but car adjustments for the Italian Grand Prix revitalized their campaign, leading to a streak of three wins and a second-place finish in four races. The upcoming race in Abu Dhabi presents a unique challenge, differing significantly from recent events in Las Vegas and Qatar.
McLaren faces a more complex team dynamic, with both drivers in title contention. The team has affirmed its commitment to allowing fair competition, with the ultimate goal of a McLaren driver winning the championship, regardless of who it is. This situation leaves open the possibility of team tactics if it becomes clear one driver can aid the other in securing the title. At Red Bull, Verstappen largely stands alone, though Millenium TV sources indicate that other Red Bull-owned cars, such as those from Racing Bulls, might be instructed to make it difficult for rival teams if they find themselves in a strategic position, reminiscent of Sergio Perez’s actions in 2021.
The psychological pressure is undoubtedly more intense for Norris, who is leading the championship in McLaren’s first genuine title opportunity since 2008. The team, largely restructured, will be navigating a title fight with many members experiencing this level of pressure for the first time. Their relative inexperience was evident in a strategic error during the Qatar Grand Prix. Conversely, Red Bull and Verstappen, seasoned champions with four consecutive drivers’ titles, approach the weekend as a finely tuned winning machine. Verstappen has reportedly expressed a relaxed attitude, stating that the outcome “won’t change my life” and that he simply aims to “maximise the car.”
