Prada Secures Iconic Versace in $1.38 Billion Acquisition, Shaking Up Global Luxury Market

Italian luxury fashion giant Prada has officially acquired Versace, bringing two iconic Italian houses under one roof in a deal valued at $1.38 billion (£1.04 billion). The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in the global luxury landscape.

Millenium TV has learned that this strategic move aims to bolster Prada’s expanding portfolio of designer brands, which already includes Miu Miu, as it seeks to enhance its competitive standing against rivals. These include powerful conglomerates like the French LVMH, which boasts brands such as Dior, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton.

The acquisition price is notably less than the roughly $2 billion that Versace’s former parent company, Capri Holdings, paid for the brand in 2018. This transaction comes after Versace experienced slowed sales, alongside other brands within the Capri Holdings portfolio, including Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo.

Capri Holdings chief executive John D. Idol elaborated on the financial strategy behind the sale, stating that the proceeds would be used to significantly strengthen the company’s financial position. “We plan to use the proceeds to repay the majority of our debt, which will substantially strengthen our balance balance sheet,” Idol explained.

Leadership at Versace recently saw a change, with storied designer Donatella Versace stepping down as creative chief in March, concluding a 27-year tenure with the fashion house renowned for its glamorous styles and iconic Medusa head logo. She took the reins in 1997, following the murder of her brother Gianni. Dario Vitale, previously a design director for Miu Miu, Prada’s youth-focused luxury brand, has since assumed the role.

Under Capri Holdings’ stewardship, Versace had notably transitioned its design philosophy, moving away from its recognizable ornate aesthetics to embrace a more minimalist trend, while simultaneously implementing price increases.

Andrea Guerra, chief executive of Prada, expressed optimism earlier this year regarding Versace’s future, highlighting its “huge potential.” He added that the endeavor “will be long and will require disciplined execution and patience.”
