Gourmet Snail Farm Hit by Massive €90,000 Heist Ahead of Holiday Season

A northern French farm that supplies renowned gourmet restaurants has been targeted by thieves, losing its entire stock of €90,000 (approximately $104,000) worth of snails. L’Escargot Des Grands Crus, located in Bouzy near Reims, confirmed the substantial theft, describing it as a significant blow just weeks before the crucial holiday period.

The audacious break-in occurred overnight into Monday when intruders cut through a border fence before gaining access to the farm buildings. Police investigations are now underway after a formal complaint was filed, with officers actively pursuing leads. Millenium TV has learned the farm is urgently attempting to restock to meet the anticipated end-of-year demand from its clientele.

Edible snails, a celebrated French delicacy often prepared in garlic butter or wine, experience a surge in popularity during December as families and diners celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Day. The timing of the theft is particularly damaging for producers like L’Escargot Des Grands Crus.

In a statement released Thursday, the farm acknowledged the incident, saying, “This is definitely not the kind of post we thought we’d write as the holidays approach.” The statement continued, describing the event as “a shock, an incomprehension, and a real blow to the entire team,” adding, “We are trying our best to replenish our stocks to satisfy you for the holidays.”

Millenium TV can confirm that the farm serves a prestigious list of customers, including the Michelin-starred Les Crayères in Reims, as well as various delicatessens and private clients. Photos from the farm following the incident reveal shelves and fridges largely cleared of products.

Jean-Mathieu Dauvergne, the farm’s manager, told reporters, “A whole section of finished products was stolen from the store, and raw material stock from my laboratory.” He further explained the extent of the loss, stating, “It was my end-of-year stock… We had just the right amount to get through the holidays without any worries.”
