Floyd Co. first grader prepares for open craniotomy

FLOYD CO., Ky.  The hallways at Betsy Lane Elementary school were filled with First grader Elijah Minixs’ favorite color on Friday.

Elijah is 7-years-old, and his family describes him as “always going,” and loves to play outside with his favorite animals.

It was not until one day, his family discovered news that shocked them, as the doctors found an arachnoid cyst on Elijah’s brain.

Elijah’s dad David Minix said they found the cyst by accident.

“He had a fall, and it was imaged and he had multiple MRI’s and it didn’t show any growth at all. And then Dr. Gump’s like, ‘Most of these won’t grow.’ So, if he has any more symptoms, we’ll image him again. As long as he’s not having any symptoms, let him play, let him be happy, let him be a normal kid,“ David said.

Elijah’s parents said about three months ago, he started to experience symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.

Elijah was then shortly scheduled for an open craniotomy Friday, Oct. 10.

Principal at Betsy Lane Elementary Jonathan Parsons said it is important that his friends and teachers show support.

“His favorite color is green. So, as the school, we want to show a support. So, you know, and one good thing about Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky especially is, you know, we lean on each other,” Parsons said.

Elijah has not been able to attend school for a few months, as his mom said he has been home-bound.

“As soon as he gets the surgery over with and done, then it’s get-well cards that we’re going to send, and show support any way we can to make him feel better so we can get him back in school and seeing him as his self,” Parsons said.

As they filled the hall with his favorite color, they also wrote ‘get-well-soon’ cards to send to him while he is in the hospital.

As Elijah was preparing for surgery, the doctors decided to postpone the procedure as he was having issues with his asthma. The surgeons said he must see a pulmonologist before they can reschedule the surgery.
