Turkiye Parliament Approves Law to Restrict Social Media Usage for Children Under 15

In a significant legislative move, Turkiye’s parliament has passed a bill aimed at regulating social media usage among minors under the age of 15. This new law mandates social media platforms to implement age-verification tools and enhanced control mechanisms to ensure that children below the specified age do not access their services.

The bill comes amidst growing concerns about the impact of social media on young minds, including issues related to privacy, mental health, and exposure to inappropriate content. By enforcing age restrictions, lawmakers hope to create a safer online environment for children.

Under the new regulations, social media companies operating in Turkiye will be required to introduce robust age-verification processes during account creation. These systems must effectively differentiate users under 15 from older users and limit access accordingly.

Furthermore, the law obligates platforms to deploy control mechanisms designed to monitor and restrict certain content and interactions that could be harmful to younger audiences. This includes measures to prevent cyberbullying, exposure to violent or explicit material, and unauthorized data collection.

The legislative process saw active debates among MPs, with supporters emphasizing child protection and critics raising concerns about privacy invasion and the practicality of enforcing strict age verification.

Despite these challenges, the bill received majority support and is now set to be implemented with a timeline for social media companies to comply. Officials have underscored the importance of balancing technological innovation with safeguarding the welfare of children.

The move by Turkiye reflects a broader global trend where governments are increasingly enacting laws to regulate social media use among minors, recognizing the unique vulnerabilities children face online.

Experts in child psychology and digital security have broadly welcomed the decision, noting that early intervention can mitigate risks associated with excessive or irresponsible social media use.

The government has pledged to monitor the effectiveness of the new measures and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the law achieves its intended objectives.

This legislative step marks a proactive approach by Turkiye in safeguarding the digital rights and safety of its younger population, setting a precedent for other nations grappling with similar challenges in the digital era.
