Last SDF Fighters Leave Syria’s Aleppo After Deadly Clashes

The city of Aleppo in Syria has witnessed a significant shift in control as the last fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reportedly left the area following days of intense and deadly clashes. Aleppo’s governor confirmed that this departure marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict.

The Syrian army has successfully taken control of the strategic Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, which had been a stronghold for SDF fighters. This area, located in northern Aleppo, saw some of the fiercest fighting in recent days, leading to numerous casualties on both sides. The withdrawal of SDF fighters signals a consolidation of government forces’ power within the city.

Aleppo has been a focal point in the broader Syrian conflict for many years, with control of its neighborhoods frequently changing hands between various factions. The recent movements reflect shifting alliances and territorial control battles that continue to shape the conflict’s landscape.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, a predominantly Kurdish group allied with the US-led coalition against ISIS, had maintained a presence in parts of northern Aleppo. However, the military advances by the Syrian army have pressured the SDF to retreat from their positions.

Local residents have expressed a mixture of relief and concern. Some view the Syrian army’s control as a return to stability, while others worry about the implications for Kurdish communities and the potential for further violence.

Human rights groups have raised alarms about the humanitarian situation during and after the conflicts, emphasizing the need for aid and protections for civilians caught in the crossfire. Infrastructure damage and displacement have compounded the suffering in Aleppo, which has already endured years of war.

The Syrian government’s recapture of Sheikh Maqsoud provides it with a strategic advantage in Aleppo, reasserting its authority over a key urban area. This development may also influence future negotiations and power dynamics in peace talks aimed at resolving the broader Syrian conflict.

The retreat of the SDF from Aleppo’s city limits could signal a shift in the group’s focus towards other regions or a recalibration of their military and political strategies. Observers remain attentive to how this exit affects the broader Kurdish involvement in Syria.

As Aleppo enters a new phase under Syrian army control, the international community continues to watch cautiously, calling for efforts to protect civilians, support reconstruction, and move towards a sustainable peace in Syria. The recent events mark another chapter in the complex and ongoing saga of the Syrian war, underscoring the profound challenges that lie ahead for the nation’s future.
