How War Changed Eid in Lebanon

The impact of nearly three years of war and displacement has profoundly altered the traditional celebration of Eid in Lebanon. For many families, the arrival of Eid no longer brings the usual joy and festivity. Instead, it is overshadowed by the harsh realities of conflict, loss, and uncertainty that have become part of their daily lives.

Eid, a festival traditionally marked by communal prayers, shared meals, and joyous gatherings, now carries a somber tone in many Lebanese communities. The ongoing war has led to widespread destruction, uprooting families from their homes and fracturing social networks. Displacement camps and shelters have replaced familiar neighborhoods, and the normal preparations for Eid celebrations are often impossible under such circumstances.

Economic hardship caused by the war has further dimmed the spirit of Eid. Many families struggle to afford basic necessities, let alone the special foods and new clothes typically associated with the festival. The scarcity of resources and the soaring costs of living make it difficult for people to purchase gifts or host festive meals, which are central to Eid traditions.

Moreover, the psychological toll of the war weighs heavily during Eid. Families mourn lost loved ones, while others grapple with the uncertainty of an unsettled future. The communal prayers and social rituals meant to foster unity and happiness are tinged with grief and anxiety in many areas affected by the conflict.

Despite these challenges, some communities strive to maintain Eid traditions as a form of resilience and hope. Humanitarian organizations have stepped in to distribute aid and arrange community events to help preserve a sense of normalcy and joy, even if modest. These efforts, while limited, highlight the enduring spirit of those affected by the war.

In essence, the war has transformed Eid in Lebanon from a time of celebration to a reflection of struggle and survival. The festival remains a poignant reminder of the profound changes the country has endured and the resilience of its people in the face of ongoing adversity.
