A North London nursery worker has admitted to sexually abusing young children under his care, a revelation that has sent shockwaves through the community. Vincent Chan, 45, appeared before Wood Green Crown Court and pleaded guilty to 26 charges, including sexual assault by penetration, sexual assault by touching, and creating indecent images depicting the most severe category of child sex abuse.
The extensive investigation into Chan began after a crucial tip-off from a whistleblower. Millenium TV understands that this case quickly became one of the most “harrowing and complex” investigations undertaken by authorities, according to officials familiar with the inquiry. Chan, residing on Stanhope Avenue in Finchley, is scheduled for sentencing on January 23.
Authorities explained that the offenses committed by Chan have caused “deep shock and distress” within the community. Chan first drew attention for filming children at the Bright Horizons nursery located on Finchley Road, West Hampstead. That specific branch of the nursery has since ceased operations.
When detectives launched their inquiry, they discovered what was described as “deeply disturbing material” on Chan’s electronic devices, as well as on iPads seized from the nursery premises. Further investigation uncovered video evidence of the sexual abuse of children within the nursery, with some recordings reportedly made using the nursery’s own iPads.
Chan began his employment at the nursery in 2017. He had undergone advance vetting by the Disclosure and Barring Service and previously worked as a karate club instructor and in a school setting. Born and raised in the UK and of Chinese heritage, Chan held various roles at the nursery, including art specialist, room leader, and nursery nurse, entrusted with the care of children aged between two and four years old.
Family members of many of the young victims were present in court as the charges were read, with many visibly emotional. Following Chan’s guilty pleas, the parents of the victims released a joint statement through their legal representative. “As parents we are still trying to process the sickening discovery that our children were subjected to despicable abuse,” the statement read. “We feel that Bright Horizons has failed us, and we want answers. How was someone like Vincent Chan employed? And how were such horrific crimes against children able to continue for so long without the staff responsible for safeguarding at Bright Horizons nursery acting? We are concerned that failures in management and supervision at Bright Horizons allowed this abuse to go undetected, and we are committed to securing accountability for our children.”
In response to the developments, a spokesperson for Bright Horizons conveyed the organization’s shock. “We are shocked and appalled by this individual’s horrific crimes,” the spokesperson stated. “Our thoughts are first and foremost with the children and families affected, and we are committed to offering support to them during this incredibly difficult time.”
