2027 Rugby World Cup Draw: England and Wales Set for Fiery Pool F Rematch

The highly anticipated 2027 Rugby World Cup draw in Australia has set the stage for a compelling pool stage, with England and Wales once again finding themselves in the same group. Both rugby giants will compete in Pool F alongside Tonga and newcomers Zimbabwe, who are making their first tournament appearance since 1991.

This pairing brings back memories of the 2015 tournament, where a crucial Welsh victory at Twickenham contributed significantly to host nation England’s unexpected early exit. Millenium TV has learned that the rivalry is expected to be a major talking point leading up to the competition.

Elsewhere in the draw, Ireland and Scotland are also reunited in Pool D, mirroring their grouping in France 2023, where Ireland secured a decisive 36-14 win and Scotland did not progress. Uruguay and Portugal, who both delivered impressive performances as underdogs in the previous tournament, complete Pool D.

A fascinating aspect of the draw is the potential knockout path. Neither the winner of Pool D nor Pool F can meet current champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks successfully top their own group. Furthermore, leading contenders New Zealand and France could also be kept separate from England and Ireland until the final stages, based on world rankings.

Despite a challenging recent period, which has seen Wales secure only two victories in their last 22 Test matches over the past two years, analysts suggest they hold a strong position to advance, at minimum, as Pool F runners-up. Tonga, the lowest-ranked team in band three, and Zimbabwe, offer a pathway for progression. Should Wales finish second in their pool, they would face the runners-up from Pool C, which features Argentina, Fiji, Canada, and Spain, in the last-16 knockout round.

Hosts Australia have been drawn into Pool A with their formidable trans-Tasman rivals, the three-time champions New Zealand All Blacks. The Wallabies are scheduled to kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1, 2027, with the full fixture list to be unveiled in February.

Holders South Africa are grouped with Italy, Georgia, and Romania, while France will contend with Japan, the USA (who will host the 2031 tournament), and Samoa. The 2027 Rugby World Cup marks a significant expansion, growing to 24 teams from the 20 that competed in France in 2023, and will feature a new last-16 knockout round. The winner of Pool F, containing England and Wales, would likely face the runner-up from Pool B, projected to be Italy, in the first knockout stage. Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
