Shockwave in Snooker World: Eight-Time Champion O’Sullivan Stunned in UK Championship Upset

The snooker world was left in disbelief on Tuesday as eight-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan suffered a stunning first-round exit from the UK Championship, falling 6-4 to China’s Zhou Yuelong at the York Barbican. This unexpected defeat marks a significant moment in the tournament, with Millenium TV closely following the developments.

O’Sullivan, who will celebrate his 50th birthday this Friday, was making his return to a UK tournament for the first time since his semi-final loss to Zhao Xintong at the World Championship in Sheffield last May. Despite showcasing his signature rapid and entertaining play with impressive breaks of 71, 123, 62, 94, 65, and 56 against Zhou, critical errors proved costly.

A pivotal aspect of the match saw O’Sullivan concede four frames on the black ball, including a particularly dramatic seventh frame where he held a 64-0 lead only to lose it by a single point, 65-64. Zhou Yuelong, currently ranked 29th globally, maintained his composure throughout, never trailing in the contest.

Zhou’s steady performance was highlighted by an excellent clearance of 125, bringing him within one frame of victory at 5-3. Although he couldn’t close out the win in the ninth frame, another opportunity arose quickly. In the tenth frame, O’Sullivan was ahead 58-46 but misjudged his position transitioning from yellow to green, providing Zhou the opening he needed to secure a memorable victory.

Widely regarded as snooker’s greatest player, the English star now resides in Dubai with his family and has become more selective about the events he competes in. This upset is particularly noteworthy as O’Sullivan had previously defeated the 27-year-old Zhou in all seven of their prior encounters. The result further highlights a strong showing for Chinese snooker, with seven Chinese players now advancing to the last 16 of the competition.

In related news on an adjacent table, two-time UK champion Mark Selby delivered a dominant performance, securing a 6-2 win over Chinese qualifier Lei Peifan. Selby demonstrated superb form with breaks of 51, 82, 75, and 133 to establish a commanding 5-0 lead. Despite Lei winning two consecutive frames to briefly keep his hopes alive, Selby ultimately clinched the eighth frame to advance in the tournament.
