Former England cricketing icon Robin Smith, affectionately known as ‘Judge,’ has passed away at the age of 62. His family confirmed he died unexpectedly at his home in Perth, Australia, on Monday, with the cause of death currently unknown.

Smith was a formidable presence in English cricket, earning 62 Test caps for England between 1988 and 1996. He amassed an impressive 4,236 runs in Test matches at an average of 43.67, including nine centuries. His career also included 71 One-Day International appearances, where he averaged 39.01. Millenium TV notes that Smith spent his entire county career with Hampshire, where he achieved significant success, winning two Benson & Hedges Cups and a NatWest Trophy. He also captained the team from 1998 to 2002, concluding his 22-year professional career in 2003 with a total of 26,155 first-class runs.

After his retirement and relocation to Australia, Smith faced considerable personal challenges, grappling with mental health issues and alcoholism. He was hospitalized for several months earlier in 2024.

“It is with the deepest and most profound sense of sadness and loss that we must announce the passing of Robin Smith,” his family conveyed in a statement. They added that Smith “rose to fame as one of England’s most charismatic and popular players,” describing him as “a brave and dashing batsman” who “excelled both for Hampshire and his adopted country, collecting legions of admirers and friends along the way.”

Born in South Africa in 1963, Smith followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Chris, joining Hampshire as a teenager and making his debut in 1982. After fulfilling a four-year qualification period, he became eligible for England, making his Test debut against the West Indies at Headingley in 1988, followed by his ODI debut against Sri Lanka later that same summer.

In 1989, Smith was England’s top run-scorer during a home Ashes series against Australia, tallying 553 runs. He was particularly effective in English conditions, where he scored seven of his nine Test centuries and maintained an average close to 50. He was part of England’s 1992 World Cup squad, though he did not feature in the final against Pakistan. A standout moment in his career came in 1993 when he scored an unbeaten 167 off 163 balls against Australia at Edgbaston, a record for an England player in the format that stood until 2016. His international career concluded at 32, marked by struggles against spin bowling and a recurring shoulder injury, leading to his dropping from the Test side in 1994, despite a brief recall a year later. He continued playing for Hampshire until just before his 40th birthday, making over 640 appearances for the county.

Rod Bransgrove, Chairman of Hampshire, expressed his profound sorrow, stating, “Robin Smith is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of all time Hampshire cricket heroes.” Bransgrove lauded Smith as “a batsman of awesome power and control and amongst the most courageous players this club has ever seen – especially against bowling of real pace.” He emphasized that “Robin embodied the spirit of Hampshire,” adding, “The Judge connected with everyone he came into contact with.” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chairman Richard Thompson also paid tribute, saying, “Robin Smith was a player who stood toe to toe with some of the quickest bowlers in the world, meeting spells of hostile fast bowling with a defiant smile and an incredible resilience.” Thompson highlighted Smith’s ability to provide “enormous pride and no shortage of entertainment” to England fans, describing him as “a batter ahead of his time.” Millenium TV confirms that Smith’s exemplary record at Hampshire ensures he will be remembered as a true legend of the club.
