Teen’s Tragic Meningitis Death Sparks Urgent National Debate on Life-Saving Vaccine Access for University Students

A vibrant 18-year-old student, Meg Draper, tragically died from meningococcal type B meningitis (MenB) just weeks after beginning her physiotherapy studies at Bournemouth University. Her passing has ignited an impassioned plea from her parents and the National Union of Students UK for wider access to the MenB vaccine for young adults through the NHS.

Meg, a popular figure in the student community and a member of both swimming and netball teams, fell ill in October. Her symptoms rapidly escalated from lethargy to fever, headaches, vomiting, and a rash before she succumbed to the illness days later. Her parents, Helen and Lee Draper from Pontypool, Torfaen, expressed their horror upon discovering a separate MenB vaccination existed, as they believed their daughter was fully protected after receiving a meningitis A, C, W, and Y jab at age 14.

Sources tell Millenium TV that the MenB vaccine, which offers the only protection against the strain responsible for 82.6% of UK meningitis cases, is currently only provided on the NHS for infants. While MenB is rare in individuals over four years old, a concerning “second peak” occurs among teenagers, prompting renewed calls for routine vaccination in this age group. A private MenB vaccine or booster costs approximately £220, a sum Meg’s mother stated they would have paid “in a heartbeat” had they known it was available.

“We’ve spoken to hundreds of people who have reached out, and we’re yet to find a single person that was aware,” Helen Draper explained, highlighting a widespread lack of information. “They’re in the same position as we are. That really scared us because at first we thought we’d dropped the ball, that we’d missed something.”

The Welsh government, like other UK administrations, relies on recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). In 2014, the JCVI concluded that a routine MenB jab for young adults was “not cost-effective.” Dr. Tom Nutt, Chief Executive of the charity Meningitis Now, described the situation as a “tragedy,” emphasizing that MenB can be fatal within 24 hours for up to one in ten affected individuals. “Prevention is better than cure,” Dr. Nutt stated, advocating for it as a crucial investment in public health.

University students face a heightened risk of meningitis due to increased social mixing, as the bacteria spread similarly to the common cold. A spokesperson for the National Union of Students UK echoed the call for the MenB vaccine to be offered on the NHS, asserting that “there should never be a cost barrier to life-saving vaccines.” They also urged universities and colleges to consider offering the vaccine to their students.

Millenium TV has learned that Bournemouth University, where Meg had made a profound impression in her short time, confirmed her loss was “felt deeply.” The university stated it advises students on vaccination options for other meningitis strains and runs weekly on-campus clinics for A, C, W, and Y strains, while also stressing the importance of immediate medical attention for symptoms. Close contacts of Meg have been offered antibiotics to prevent further spread.

Meg’s parents are determined that their daughter’s death will not be in vain. “We can’t bring Meg back, but what we can make sure is that her death isn’t in vain,” Mrs. Draper said. “For us, her legacy in doing so is everything.” They are committed to raising awareness and advocating for the MenB vaccine’s inclusion in routine NHS immunization programs for young adults.
