Tasmania withstand New South Wales resistance to claim innings win

Tasmania vs New South Wales, Hobart

New South Wales’ middle and lower order fought on but couldn’t prevent an innings defeat to Tasmania in Hobart. The visitors were bundled out for 311 in their second essay, falling short by just one run to make the home team bat again.

Resuming the day at a precarious 46/3, unbeaten opener Ryan Hackney and wicketkeeper Matthew Gilkes put on an 82-run stand for the fourth wicket, reviving NSW’s frailing second innings. the pair fell in the space of ten overs, followed by skipper Moises Henriques in another 12 overs. However, Oliver Davies and Chris Green, with their contrasting 62 and 61 respectively, again revived a faint hope of salvaging something out of this.

Davies put on 65 with Green, who en route his patient unbeaten 61 added another half-century stand with Ben Dwarshuis. At 301/7, with a well set Green in the middle, NSW would have taken a win in the form of making their opponent bat again. However, the last three wickets fell for just 10 runs and the tourists were bundled out for 311, with Lawrence Neil-Smith picking an identical 3-57 in the second bowling innings again.

Brief scores: New South Wales 181 (Oliver Davies 67, Mooises Henriques 50; Gabe Bell 4-29, Lawrence Neil-Smith 3-57) & 311 (Oliver Davies 62, Chris Green 61*, Matthew Gilkes 56; Lawrence Neil-Smith 3-57, Bradley Hope 2-42) lost to Tasmania 493 (Bradley Hope 132*, Jake Doran 118, Beau Webster 103; Jackson Bird 3-102) by innings and 1 run.
