Saudi Arabia Cancels 2026 ‘Davos in the Desert’ Amid Houthi Attacks, Postpones Conference to 2027

In a significant development, Saudi Arabia has announced the cancellation of its flagship investment event, the 2026 edition of ‘Davos in the Desert’ conference, originally scheduled to be held next year. The decision comes amid escalating security concerns following a series of attacks by the Houthi rebel group. The conference, which has been a major global financial and economic gathering, will now be postponed until 2027.

The Saudi government has cited the ongoing security threats as the primary factor in this cancellation. The Houthi attacks, which have targeted various strategic locations within Saudi Arabia, have elevated the risk level, prompting the authorities to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of attendees and personnel.

In conjunction with canceling the conference, the Saudi authorities have issued directives requiring government employees to work from home. This shift to remote work is part of broader safety protocols to minimize exposure to potential threats and maintain operational continuity within government sectors.

‘Davos in the Desert’ is considered one of the most prominent investment forums in the Middle East, attracting global business leaders, investors, and policymakers. It serves as a platform to explore economic opportunities, discuss regional stability, and foster partnerships aimed at Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 economic transformation plan.

The cancellation is expected to have a ripple effect across the global investment community, as many stakeholders had looked forward to the 2026 event to finalize deals and forge new connections. However, safety remains the paramount concern amid the volatile regional security landscape.

Saudi Arabia has expressed commitment to rescheduling the conference to 2027, signaling its determination to maintain its role as a premier host for international business dialogue once conditions improve. Officials have reassured participants that efforts will be intensified to enhance security measures ahead of the next event.

The Houthi group, based in Yemen, has escalated its attacks in recent months, targeting not only military facilities but also civilian infrastructures in Saudi Arabia. These developments have complicated the security situation, prompting the Saudi government to remain vigilant and adopt proactive steps such as this cancellation.

Experts view the postponement as a reflection of the broader geopolitical tensions impacting the Gulf region. It underscores the challenges faced by Saudi Arabia in balancing its ambitious development goals with the imperative of national security.

Going forward, international investors and participants will closely monitor the security environment and Saudi Arabia’s measures to ensure the safe resumption of such high-profile events. Meanwhile, the decision to move government workers to remote work marks a notable shift in administrative operations during these uncertain times.

As the situation evolves, Saudi Arabia’s leadership continues to prioritize the protection of its people, institutions, and economic interests. The deferral of ‘Davos in the Desert’ to 2027 is a testament to their cautious approach amidst ongoing regional turmoil.
