Sudan Army Accused of Drone Strike on Livestock Market in South Darfur

Tensions continue to escalate in Sudan’s South Darfur region amidst ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Sudanese army recently conducted a drone strike, claiming to have targeted RSF command centers. However, the RSF has accused the army of striking a crowded livestock market, causing civilian casualties and widespread panic.

According to official statements from the Sudanese army, the drone strike was a precise operation aimed at disabling RSF command hubs that have been orchestrating attacks in the region. Military spokespeople emphasized that the operation was necessary to curb the RSF’s growing influence and disrupt their military capabilities.

Contradicting this account, the RSF has vehemently denied the army’s claims and provided an alternative narrative, stating that the strike hit a bustling livestock market where civilians were trading and conducting daily business. Witnesses and local sources reported significant casualties among civilians, including traders and farmers, resulting in chaos and urgent calls for medical assistance.

The strike has reignited concerns over the intensifying conflict in Sudan, which has seen sporadic bouts of fighting between government forces and the RSF. South Darfur, already suffering from instability, has witnessed increased violence, displacement of residents, and disruption of essential services.

Human rights organizations monitoring the conflict have condemned attacks that impact non-combatants, underscoring the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law. The alleged strike on a market underscores the immense risks faced by civilians caught between rival factions.

The Sudanese government has yet to provide a detailed investigation into the incident, fueling skepticism among observers and international stakeholders regarding the official account. Calls for independent investigations and greater transparency are growing louder as the situation remains volatile.

The use of drones in the conflict represents a troubling development, highlighting the modernization of warfare techniques in Sudan but also raising the stakes for civilian safety. Experts warn that drone strikes in populated areas can have devastating consequences and complicate peace efforts.

As the situation stands, residents of South Darfur continue to navigate an increasingly perilous environment. The international community is watching closely, urging restraint from all parties and emphasizing the urgent need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further loss of life and suffering.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the fragile state of peace in Sudan and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of the conflict. Both the Sudanese army and the RSF face mounting pressure to halt hostilities and protect civilians from the fallout of military operations.

In the coming days, all eyes will be on Sudanese authorities and the international community’s response as they seek to de-escalate tensions and address the humanitarian consequences of the drone strike. The fate of countless civilians hinges on the ability of warring parties to engage in meaningful negotiation and uphold fundamental human rights.
