US War on Iran Puts Cambodian Children’s Education at Risk

The escalating conflict between the United States and Iran is having far-reaching consequences beyond the Middle East, notably impacting the education of children in Cambodia. Despite the geographical distance, the ripple effects of this war are felt in various sectors in Cambodia, particularly in education, which is crucial for the nation’s future development.

The primary way the conflict affects Cambodia is through broader economic instability. The war has led to fluctuations in global oil prices, increasing fuel and transportation costs worldwide. Cambodia, being a developing country with limited economic resilience, is particularly vulnerable to these shifts. As energy prices soar, the cost of operating schools, providing transportation for students, and even heating or cooling classrooms rises. This places additional financial burdens on an already strained Cambodian education system.

Moreover, many families in Cambodia live in poverty, and the increased costs of living caused by the war’s indirect effects reduce household income available for educational expenses. Parents may be forced to make difficult choices between feeding their family and paying for school supplies or tuition fees. Consequently, school attendance decreases, and dropout rates rise, threatening the progress Cambodia has made in improving literacy and educational attainment.

Foreign aid is another critical factor at risk due to the US-Iran conflict. Cambodia depends on international aid for substantial portions of its education budget. However, with the US and other Western countries diverting resources to military efforts or re-evaluating their foreign policy priorities, aid to Cambodian education may be reduced or delayed. This jeopardizes projects aimed at building better school infrastructure, training teachers, and providing learning materials.

The conflict has also destabilized global markets, affecting the supply chains that deliver educational resources to Cambodia. Shortages and increased costs of paper, books, and technology hinder schools’ efforts to provide quality education. The digital divide worsens as schools cannot afford to equip students with the necessary tools to participate in modern, technology-driven learning.

Furthermore, the psychological impact of distant wars should not be overlooked. News of global conflicts can create anxiety and uncertainty among citizens, including children. This atmosphere can affect students’ concentration, motivation, and overall mental health, further diminishing their educational experiences.

In conclusion, while the US war on Iran is centered thousands of miles away from Cambodia, its effects are deeply felt in the country. The education of Cambodian children — the foundation for the nation’s future — is at significant risk due to economic strain, reduced international aid, disrupted supply chains, and psychological stress. Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated global effort to mitigate the indirect harm caused by geopolitical conflicts and prioritize the education and well-being of vulnerable populations worldwide.
