US War on Iran Puts Cambodian Children’s Education at Risk

The escalating tensions and conflict stemming from the ongoing US war on Iran have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate geopolitical landscape. One of the most vulnerable groups facing adverse effects are children in Cambodia, where the worsening international situation threatens to derail education systems and obstruct efforts to provide quality learning opportunities.

As the US engages in prolonged military actions affecting Iran, global economic and political instability has surged. Cambodia, a developing nation relying heavily on external aid and stable economic conditions, finds itself caught in a ripple effect that jeopardizes its educational infrastructure.

Economic repercussions of the conflict are particularly damaging. Cambodia’s economy, dependent on foreign aid, investments, and trade partnerships, is vulnerable to the disruptions caused by international sanctions, restricted trade flows, and soaring energy prices linked to the war. These factors strain the national budget, reducing government capacity to fund educational programs, maintain school facilities, and pay teachers’ salaries.

Increased government spending on security and diplomatic efforts to navigate the crisis diverts funds away from social sectors, including education. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that traditionally support children’s schools and learning centers report funding cuts as donor countries redirect resources to military or emergency spending.

The war also impacts the global supply chains that Cambodia’s schooling system depends on, delaying the delivery of essential materials such as textbooks, school supplies, and technological tools. Without these resources, classrooms become less effective, and students face greater challenges in their pursuit of knowledge.

Additionally, psychological stress and societal anxiety permeate Cambodian communities as news of escalating hostilities dominate the media. Families may prioritize survival needs over schooling, causing an increase in dropout rates among vulnerable children, particularly girls and children from low-income families.

Educational disruption in Cambodia amid the US-Iran conflict is a sobering reminder of how global conflicts extend beyond borders. The indirect impact on education threatens to reverse years of progress toward universal education and poverty reduction in Cambodia.

Experts call for urgent international cooperation to shield education systems from the fallout of distant military conflicts. They advocate for protective policies that safeguard funding for schools, support for teachers, and community engagement to keep children in classrooms.

Moreover, there is a pressing need for humanitarian aid to ensure that children’s basic educational needs are met irrespective of geopolitical tensions. Investment in building resilient educational infrastructure that can withstand economic and supply chain shocks is also crucial.

The US war on Iran serves as a stark example of how conflicts in one part of the world can imperil the futures of children thousands of miles away. Cambodia’s children deserve uninterrupted access to education, a foundation for their future and the future prosperity of their nation.
