Number of Amputees Expected to Increase in Gaza Amid Israeli Aid Blockade, NGO Warns

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly, with thousands of amputees facing dire challenges due to limited access to medical care and mobility support. A prominent non-governmental organization (NGO) has issued a stark warning that the number of amputees in Gaza is projected to rise sharply as Israel continues to block critical aid shipments into the region.

The blockade has severely restricted the flow of medical supplies, prosthetics, and rehabilitation equipment, making it increasingly difficult for existing amputees to receive adequate care. This shortage not only threatens the health and survival of those already affected but also impacts thousands more who may become amputees as a result of ongoing violence and injuries.

Health workers in Gaza report a surge in trauma cases, many involving severe limb injuries due to conflicts and hostilities. Without timely medical intervention, many individuals face the risk of amputation. The lack of prosthetic devices and rehabilitation services exacerbates their struggle, leaving them with limited mobility and a reduced quality of life.

The NGO highlighted that the blockade disrupts not only medical supplies but also the import of essential materials needed to manufacture prosthetic limbs locally. Consequently, repair and maintenance of existing prosthetic devices are hindered, further affecting amputees’ independence and ability to participate in daily activities.

Families of amputees are also burdened by the challenges, as they try to provide care and assistance amidst dwindling resources and economic hardship. The psychological toll on amputees and their relatives is significant, with many experiencing trauma, depression, and anxiety compounded by their physical disabilities.

International humanitarian organizations have called on all parties to lift restrictions on aid deliveries to Gaza to prevent a worsening crisis. They urge for expedited clearance of medical shipments and the establishment of safe passages for patients requiring urgent treatment outside the enclave.

The warning serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need for concerted international efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Without immediate action, the number of amputees is likely to escalate, deepening the suffering of an already vulnerable population struggling amidst ongoing conflict and hardship.
