Rangoli Makers Adapt to Rising Costs to Preserve Colourful Diwali Tradition

As Diwali approaches, the vibrant tradition of creating colorful rangoli designs at Indian homes continues to thrive despite rising material costs. Rangoli makers across India, confronting increased prices for traditional materials like synthetic colors and powders, are innovating by turning to more affordable and eco-friendly organic alternatives.

Rangoli, an ancient Indian art form involving decorative patterns created on floors, typically uses colored powders, flower petals, rice, and other materials. This Diwali custom is believed to invite prosperity and happiness. However, the escalating expense of synthetic colors due to supply chain disruptions and inflation has posed challenges for artisans and households alike.

In response, many rangoli artists and suppliers are sourcing organic dyes derived from natural ingredients such as turmeric, beetroot, spinach, and marigold flowers. These organic colors not only reduce costs but also align with growing environmental awareness, eliminating harmful chemical residues and promoting sustainability.

Artisans report that natural dyes produce vibrant, lasting colors that rival synthetic hues, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of rangoli patterns. Besides cost-effectiveness, the shift to organic materials encourages the use of locally available resources, supporting rural economies.

Local vendors have started offering kits containing organic powders and dried flower petals, making it easier for the general public to embrace this eco-friendly trend. Workshops and community events are also being organized to educate people about the benefits and techniques of using organic rangoli materials.

Despite initial skepticism, the adoption of organic alternatives is gaining popularity, reflecting the community’s adaptability and commitment to sustaining this cultural heritage. Environmentalists commend this transition as a positive step towards reducing pollution and chemical waste during festive celebrations.

Experts note that this trend could influence other traditional Indian crafts to explore sustainable materials, fostering an overall culture of eco-conscious craftsmanship.

As Diwali celebrations light up homes across India, the fusion of tradition with innovation is preserving the art of rangoli for future generations, ensuring that this vibrant expression of cultural identity remains alive and flourishing amid changing times.
