Discussions regarding tobacco tax increase could bring impacts to Nebraska

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -The current tobacco tax increase could impact Nebraska economically and health wise as well.

America Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Nebraska Government Relations Director Megan Word said that 30% of cancer deaths in Nebraska are still attributable to smoking and if these proposals fail to pass, that would mean 11,790 Nebraskans who will be diagnosed with cancer in 2024, which can be prevented.

“Smoking continues to be the number one preventable cause of cancer in this country. Nebraskans. There are plenty of Nebraskans who still smoke. Still use tobacco products, “Word said. “Looking at 13% of all Nebraskaans adults smoke. Almost 15% of high school students report using tobacco right now. “

Word said that the proposal will increase all tobacco products by two dollars. This will bring in an increase the amount of money that comes into the state, and also it would have people deter away from the product.

“If we were to increase the price by 2 dollars, Nebraska would see upwards of 73.4 million dollars generated in new revenue,” said Word. “Significant increases in tobacco taxes are one of the most effective ways we deter people from smoking, using tobacco, and helping folks who currently use tobacco quit.”

According to the American Lung Association, Nebraska has received three Fs and tobacco use is the leading cause of death in Nebraska. This report is asking the Biden Administration to put an end to all sales regarding menthol cigarettes
