With Kuwait Deal, Pakistan Expands Defence Umbrella Across Middle East

Pakistan is broadening its strategic military ties in the Middle East, underscored by a recent defence agreement with Kuwait. This development is part of a wider trend where Gulf states are increasingly strengthening their military and defence links with Pakistan, including existing partnerships with countries such as Saudi Arabia.

The new defence deal with Kuwait marks a significant expansion of Pakistan’s influence and presence in the Gulf region. This pact aims to foster closer military cooperation, joint exercises, training programs, and potentially mutual intelligence sharing between the two countries. Both sides view this cooperation as critical amidst the volatile security environment in the Middle East.

Pakistan’s military establishment has historically maintained strong strategic relations with Saudi Arabia, especially through training and defence collaboration efforts. The expansion towards Kuwait represents Islamabad’s desire to extend this network further into the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. This is especially relevant as the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East continues to shift rapidly with various regional conflicts and power realignments.

However, while Pakistan is actively forging these relationships, the tangible benefits for Islamabad remain somewhat unclear. Economically and politically, Pakistan is navigating complex challenges at home, including fiscal constraints and domestic instability. Therefore, the strategic gains from these enhanced defence ties could be limited or may take time to materialize.

Nonetheless, the deepening defence umbrella across the Gulf states serves multiple purposes for Pakistan. It offers a platform to enhance its military capabilities through exposure to advanced Gulf technologies and training methodologies. Moreover, it helps Islamabad secure political goodwill and strategic partnerships that could translate into economic support or investments.

For Kuwait and other Gulf states, partnering with Pakistan provides a reliable and experienced military ally that can contribute to regional security and stability. Pakistan’s strategic location and military expertise make it an attractive partner in the face of regional threats originating from persistent conflicts and rivalries.

Overall, Pakistan’s expanding defence relationships with Gulf states like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia underscore a mutual interest in bolstering regional security collaborations. However, the precise strategic and economic benefits for Pakistan require continuous assessment as these partnerships evolve amid fluctuating regional dynamics.
