From JCPOA Exit to the 2026 Deal: How US-Iran Ties Soured Under Trump

The relationship between the United States and Iran experienced significant deterioration throughout Donald Trump’s presidency, largely shaped by key policy decisions and geopolitical maneuvering. This period saw a marked departure from the relative engagement of the previous administration, catalyzing a cascade of tensions that redefined the bilateral ties.

At the heart of the strained relations was the U.S. decision to exit the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. The JCPOA, widely known as the Iran nuclear deal, was an agreement signed in 2015 involving Iran and the P5+1 countries, including the U.S., aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Trump’s withdrawal was abrupt and unilateral, justified by his administration on grounds that the deal was flawed and insufficient in curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional influence. This move reversed years of diplomatic progress and ignited a cycle of retaliatory actions between Washington and Tehran.

Following the exit, the U.S. reinstated and intensified economic sanctions on Iran, targeting key sectors like oil exports, banking, and shipping. These measures severely impacted Iran’s economy but also escalated tensions leading to direct confrontations.

One of the most dramatic episodes was the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by a U.S. drone strike in January 2020. Soleimani was a powerful figure in Iran’s military and foreign operations, and his assassination was seen as a major escalation, provoking Iranian missile attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq.

Throughout Trump’s tenure, these hostile interactions underpinned a period of heightened uncertainty in the Middle East, affecting global energy markets and diplomatic relations among allied countries. Despite efforts from European nations to salvage the JCPOA and maintain diplomatic channels, the U.S. stance led to a collapse in trust.

By the end of Trump’s presidency, the U.S.-Iran relationship was arguably at its lowest point in decades, with no direct dialogue and persistent fears of broader conflict.

Looking towards 2026, discussions about a new deal or re-engagement reflect lessons learned and the complexities of navigating geopolitics post-Trump. The diplomatic landscape now includes considerations for regional security, nuclear non-proliferation, and economic pressures.

In summary, Trump’s presidency marked a significant and turbulent phase in U.S.-Iran relations, defined by the withdrawal from the JCPOA, reimposition of sanctions, and military escalations. These actions reshaped the geopolitical contours of the Middle East and set the stage for ongoing challenges and negotiations extending into 2026 and beyond.
