Pope Leo Urges Angola to ‘Build Hope’ During Monumental Mass Amid War-Scarred Past

On the third leg of his Africa tour, Pope Leo delivered a powerful message to the people of Angola during a massive Mass gathering. The Pope called upon Angolans to transcend the divisions wrought by their country’s turbulent and war-scarred history and to come together in hope and unity.

Angola, a nation that has endured decades of conflict, especially its lengthy civil war which ended in 2002, faces the challenge of healing deep societal wounds. Pope Leo emphasized the importance of reconciliation and a collective effort to rebuild a peaceful and prosperous future.

In his sermon, the Pope acknowledged the pain and trauma that linger in the hearts of Angolans but passionately urged them to rise above past conflicts. He highlighted that the path to national cohesion lies not in dwelling on divisions, but in fostering hope, forgiveness, and mutual understanding.

The event drew thousands of faithful to the grand Mass, symbolizing a spirit of renewed faith and solidarity among the people. The Pope’s visit reinforced the Catholic Church’s role in advocating for peace and supporting the social fabric of Angola.

Pope Leo’s Africa tour has focused on addressing the continent’s challenges including poverty, conflict, and social fragmentation. Angola represents a pivotal stop where these issues converge with a need to lay foundations for lasting harmony.

The Pontiff’s message was met with applause and inspired many Angolans to recommit to the ideals of national healing and constructive growth. Local leaders and clergy echoed the call to leave behind the bitterness of the past and unite for the common good of the country.

This visit also served as a platform to spotlight Angola’s potential and the resilience of its people despite years of adversity. Pope Leo expressed confidence in Angola’s ability to rebuild, not just physically through infrastructure, but spiritually and socially through kindness and cooperation.

The Pope’s appeal to “build hope” resonates beyond Angola, reflecting a universal call for all nations to overcome their historical wounds and strive for peace and unity.

As the Mass concluded, there was a palpable sense of optimism among attendees, many of whom felt personally touched by the Pontiff’s heartfelt words. The event marked a significant chapter in Angola’s journey toward reconciliation and marked an inspiring milestone in Pope Leo’s dedicated mission across Africa.
