Implications of Iran Threatening Closure of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait on Global Trade

The Bab al-Mandeb Strait is one of the world’s most crucial maritime chokepoints, situated between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa. It serves as a strategic gateway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, effectively linking the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean. Recently, Iran has issued threats to close this chokepoint, a move that could have significant consequences for global trade and energy markets.

The strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait lies in its role as a key transit route for approximately 4.8 million barrels of oil per day, making it a vital artery for energy supplies, particularly to Europe, Asia, and the United States. In combination with the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes, shutting down either or both could result in halting a quarter of the world’s energy supply.

Globally, about 10% of all seaborne oil trade flows through the Bab al-Mandeb. Its closure would compel tankers and cargo ships to seek longer, costlier, and potentially riskier alternate routes. One such alternative route is around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, which would significantly increase transit times and shipping costs.

The impact on world trade could be severe. Delays in supply chains could disrupt the delivery of goods and raw materials, affecting industries reliant on just-in-time inventory systems. The shipping industry would face congestion, increased fuel consumption, and insurance premiums, which would likely be passed on to consumers worldwide.

Energy markets would experience immediate turmoil. A sudden reduction in available oil transport routes would likely cause a spike in global oil prices, exacerbating inflationary pressures already experienced in many economies. Countries heavily dependent on oil imports could face energy shortages and economic instability.

The potential closure would also have geopolitical ramifications. The Bab al-Mandeb is near conflict zones, including the ongoing civil war in Yemen, and any aggressive attempts to control or shutdown the strait could further destabilize an already volatile region. Nations reliant on the strait might be compelled to increase military presence or seek diplomatic solutions to ensure the free flow of trade.

Moreover, a shutdown combined with an earlier threatened closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran would paralyze a significant share of the world’s maritime energy supply routes. This would pressure global powers to negotiate ceasefires and engage in diplomatic talks to avoid economic catastrophe.

In conclusion, Iran’s threat to close the Bab al-Mandeb strait represents a significant risk to global trade and energy security. The ripple effects would extend beyond the immediate region, impacting global markets, geopolitical stability, and the daily lives of millions worldwide. The international community must closely monitor the situation, prepare contingency plans, and pursue diplomatic avenues to maintain the flow of trade through these vital maritime chokepoints.
