Sydney was rocked by a deadly shooting at the popular Bondi Beach, where a father and son are believed to have killed 15 people during a Hanukkah gathering. The tragic incident, marked by the attack on a Jewish celebration, has sent shockwaves through Australia, a nation known for its stringent gun control and relatively rare gun violence.

Authorities confirmed the two suspects were related; the father, aged 50, who died during the incident, was an Australian resident who arrived in 1998 on a student visa, though his country of origin has not been disclosed. The son, 24 and born in Australia, sustained injuries and is currently receiving hospital treatment.

The attack targeted hundreds gathered to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish holiday. The violence claimed the lives of a 10-year-old girl, a rabbi, and a Holocaust survivor among others, while dozens suffered injuries, some severe. Investigators also found suspicious items, including improvised explosive devices, in one of the suspect’s vehicles.

Footage aired on Australian television captured a dramatic moment when a bystander confronted and disarmed one of the gunmen, highlighting the chaos of the attack.

Officials revealed the father held a firearms license permitting ownership of rifles or shotguns for recognized purposes such as target shooting, hunting, or pest control, but not for self-defense. He was affiliated with a gun club, indicating possible involvement in target shooting.

This attack comes amid a surge in antisemitic incidents across Australia, intensifying since the conflict between Hamas and Israel escalated in late 2023. The government’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism recently reported a threefold increase in assaults, vandalism, threats, and intimidation targeting Jewish communities. Previous attacks included arson and vandalism of synagogues, vehicles, homes, and businesses primarily located in Sydney and Melbourne, where the majority of Australia’s Jewish population resides.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the shooting as an act of antisemitic terrorism and has proposed tougher gun regulations. Albanese has also taken a strong stance against antisemitic violence, attributing some attacks to foreign influences and severing diplomatic ties with Iran over related concerns.

The deadly Bondi Beach shooting is the most severe mass shooting in Australia in over thirty years. Since a 1996 massacre in Port Arthur, Australia’s government has enforced strict gun control measures, making such tragedies exceedingly rare. Recent mass shootings have been fewer and typically involved isolated domestic incidents.

In the wake of this tragedy, Australian leaders are under increasing pressure to review and strengthen firearm regulations to prevent future violence.
