Humanity faces its gravest threat yet, not from distant galaxies, but from the depths of its own oceans, as a highly anticipated new Doctor Who spin-off, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” prepares to captivate audiences. Millenium TV can confirm that the five-part series will feature actor Russell Tovey in the role of Barclay, an unassuming figure thrust into the critical position of humanity’s ambassador when the ancient and formidable Sea Devils resurface.
This marks a significant return for the aquatic adversaries, whose on-screen debut occurred 53 years ago and were last seen clashing with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor three years prior. Despite their long history within the Doctor Who universe, the cast and creative team emphasize that this new narrative is designed to stand on its own, offering a compelling story accessible to both long-time fans and newcomers. The series also promises to deliver a powerful commentary on contemporary global issues.
Russell Tovey, whose previous encounters in the Doctor Who universe include a role in 2007’s “Voyage of the Damned” alongside David Tennant, expressed his enthusiasm. “It’s a truly beautiful, brilliant, and compelling show,” Tovey stated. The Sea Devils, led by the formidable Salt, portrayed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, are not merely seeking conflict but have set their sights on a grander conquest: Earth itself. Mbatha-Raw, who previously appeared in the David Tennant era as Tish, sister to the Doctor’s companion Martha Jones, underwent a remarkable transformation for her role.
Her portrayal of the Sea Devil leader involved intricate prosthetics. “The prosthetics are just so detailed,” Mbatha-Raw explained. She recounted a humorous anecdote about Tovey’s dog, Rocky, not recognizing her in costume. “I’d forget I was dressed as Salt, he’d growl and I’d think: ‘Oh yeah, I’m blue.'” Mbatha-Raw described “The War Between” as “a wild, epic, thrilling adventure” that carries profound messages about the world we inhabit and potential paths forward.
Central to the series’ themes is the complex relationship between humanity and the marine environment. In one particularly striking action sequence, the Sea Devils weaponize the immense quantities of plastic polluting their ocean, unleashing it back upon the land. Russell Tovey lauded the extraordinary efforts of the production’s set designers and special effects team in bringing these scenes to life. “You will watch this thinking a lot of money’s been spent on green screen,” the 44-year-old actor remarked, “But there were set-builds that were unbelievable. It was so immersive.”
The spin-off benefits from the creative vision of co-writer and executive producer Russell T Davies, the acclaimed Bafta-winner who spearheaded Doctor Who’s successful revival in 2005 and returned as showrunner with Ncuti Gatwa sixteen years later. Davies noted that this ambitious production, made possible through significant creative partnerships, represents a unique opportunity to realize such a visually stunning Sea Devils story. “These big pictures are gorgeous,” Davies commented, emphasizing, “However, Gugu and Russell Tovey are the heart of it. It’s all about the emotion at the centre and that’s what will get you watching.”
This series also offers a glimpse into the broader Doctor Who universe following Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor appearing to regenerate into former companion Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper. While a Christmas special is confirmed for 2026, details remain tightly guarded. Davies revealed that he has already presented his plans to network executives, leaving them “with jaws agape, loving it.” However, fans eager for more information on the Doctor’s ultimate fate will need to exercise patience, as humanity’s immediate challenge in “The War Between” is to defend itself from the Sea Devils. Davies teasingly concluded, with a grin, “Will we survive?”
“The War Between the Land and the Sea” is scheduled to premiere its first two episodes on Sunday, December 7, with an international release in early 2026.
