A horrific mass shooting at a hostel in South Africa has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including a three-year-old child. The incident, which occurred early Saturday in the Saulsville township, west of Pretoria, also left 14 people wounded when unknown gunmen stormed the premises.
Sources tell Millenium TV that the assailants entered the venue around 04:30 local time and began firing indiscriminately at a group of people who were gathered. Among the fatalities are a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, further highlighting the tragic scope of the violence.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the devastating impact, stating that a total of 25 individuals were shot. Mathe described the location as an “illegal shebeen,” underscoring the significant challenges posed by unlicensed liquor premises, which she noted are frequently sites of mass shootings. “Innocent people also get caught up in the crossfire,” she explained, referring to the inherent dangers of such establishments.
The motive behind this latest attack remains unclear, and authorities have yet to make any arrests. This incident marks another in a series of mass shootings that have plagued the crime-ridden nation in recent years.
South Africa continues to grapple with one of the world’s highest murder rates, with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime figures for 2023-24 indicating 45 deaths per 100,000 people. Police data further revealed that an average of 63 people were killed daily between April and September of the previous year.
