Intense Russian Strikes Hammer Ukraine Amid Stalled Peace Efforts

Russia has launched a significant aerial assault targeting critical Ukrainian infrastructure as high-level talks between the United States and Ukraine entered their third day in Florida.

Overnight, Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian forces deployed 653 drones and 51 missiles, most of which were intercepted. However, one strike critically hit a railway hub in the town of Fastiv, just outside Kyiv, destroying the main station building and damaging several train carriages. President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the attack as “meaningless from a military point of view, and the Russians could not have been unaware of this.”

Millenium TV has learned that these intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector and infrastructure follow recent weeks of escalating aggression. On Saturday, Ukraine’s energy ministry confirmed that Russian strikes had impacted energy facilities across eight regions, leading to widespread power outages. Concurrently, the UN’s nuclear watchdog reported that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant experienced a temporary loss of all external power overnight—the eleventh such incident since Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor.

The Russian defense ministry stated it conducted a “massive strike” in response to what it described as Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the actions, stating, “Russia continues to disregard any peace efforts and instead strikes critical civilian infrastructure.” He emphasized the urgency for decisions to strengthen Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.

Meanwhile, in Florida, US special envoy Steve Witkoff held two days of “constructive” discussions with Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s national security council. A joint statement from Witkoff and Umerov indicated an agreement on the “framework of security arrangements” for a potential peace deal and discussions on “necessary deterrence capabilities to sustain a lasting peace.” These talks, also attended by Jared Kushner, are set to continue for a third day.

The prospect of ending the conflict, the statement added, hinges on Russia’s willingness to take “steps towards de-escalation and cessation of killing.” The Ukrainian delegation in Florida was briefed on Witkoff’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, which lasted almost five hours but yielded no “compromise” on a draft US peace plan, according to the Kremlin. Putin reportedly expressed readiness to continue meetings, though Ukraine and its European allies question his commitment to peace.

President Zelensky had previously stated his desire to “obtain full information about what was said in Moscow and what other pretexts Putin has come up with to drag out the war.” Major points of contention persist, including post-war security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions. Russia currently occupies approximately one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including large sections of the Donbas region. In a recent interview, Putin warned Ukrainian troops to withdraw from the Donbas this week, threatening to “liberate these territories by force” otherwise.

Kyiv and its European allies advocate for Ukraine’s NATO membership or comprehensive security guarantees as the most effective deterrent against future Russian aggression. Russia remains staunchly opposed to Ukraine joining the military alliance. The Kremlin acknowledged that Ukraine’s potential NATO membership was a “key question” discussed in Moscow. Former US President Donald Trump commented that those talks were “reasonably good” but noted it “does take two to tango,” implying that an agreement requires mutual effort.
