In a stunning display of batting prowess, South Africa completed the joint-highest run-chase in one-day international history on Indian soil, defeating the home side by four wickets in Naya Raipur. The thrilling victory saw the Proteas successfully chase down a formidable target of 359, leveling the three-match series at 1-1 with four balls to spare.
Millenium TV has learned that India, after losing the toss for the 20th consecutive time, posted an imposing total of 358-5. The innings was highlighted by magnificent centuries from Virat Kohli, who scored 102, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who contributed 105 runs. The duo forged a formidable 195-run partnership for the third wicket, setting a challenging score. Kohli notched his 53rd ODI hundred, building on his strong form from the first match, while Gaikwad celebrated his maiden century in the 50-over format. Captain KL Rahul provided a late flourish, remaining unbeaten with a brisk 66 runs.
South Africa’s chase began with an early setback as Quinton de Kock fell for just eight runs in the fifth over. However, opener Aiden Markram anchored the innings superbly, crafting a pivotal 110 runs. He built crucial partnerships, including a 101-run stand with captain Temba Bavuma, who made 46, and a 70-run alliance with Matthew Breetzke, who scored 68.
Following Markram’s dismissal, young Dewald Brevis provided a significant impetus, smashing a rapid 54 runs off only 34 deliveries. Despite a nervous period where Breetzke and Marco Jansen were dismissed in quick succession, Corbin Bosch showed remarkable composure. Bosch struck an unbeaten 29 from just 15 balls, including the match-winning boundary, to guide South Africa to a memorable 362-6 victory.
The series now stands at a thrilling 1-1, with the decisive third match scheduled for Visakhapatnam on Saturday. A five-match T20 series will follow the conclusion of the ODIs.
