Celtic Unveils Wilfried Nancy as New Manager, Vowing “Exciting, Attacking, Winning Football”

Wilfried Nancy has been officially named the new manager of Celtic, signing a two-and-a-half year contract and promising supporters “exciting, attacking, winning football.” The 48-year-old French tactician is set to commence his duties this Thursday, stepping in for interim boss Martin O’Neill after a prolonged transfer from Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew was finalized.

Nancy faces an immediate baptism of fire, with his inaugural match scheduled for Sunday at Celtic Park against top-of-the-table rivals Hearts in the Scottish Premiership. This high-stakes encounter will be swiftly followed by a Europa League fixture hosting Roma, and then the League Cup final clash with St Mirren the following week.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Nancy stated, “I can’t wait to get going and become part of such a brilliant institution. Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, real atmosphere and heart and soul, real high standards and real demands, which I am ready for. I know the history, I know the values of Celtic and I know what is expected of me on this journey.” He further emphasized, “I know what Celtic means to so many people and my No. 1 aim will be simple – to give our fans a strong, exciting, attacking, winning football team they can be so proud of.”

Celtic had been seeking a permanent manager since Brendan Rodgers’ departure on October 27, when club legend Martin O’Neill took the reins as caretaker. Under O’Neill’s guidance, the Parkhead club maintained a perfect domestic record, narrowing the gap to Hearts to just two points and securing a spot in the League Cup final. Nancy extended his gratitude, saying, “I want to thank the great Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney for all they have done in recent weeks with the team. These guys have given so much to the club across so many years and I know our fans, like me, all recognize the brilliant job they have done. They have my total respect and my total gratitude. I hope to meet them both very soon and thank them personally.”

Nancy’s coaching journey began in Canada following his playing career in France. He notably led Montreal to the Canadian Championship in 2021 after Thierry Henry’s resignation. Moving to Columbus Crew in 2022, he guided the Ohio team to an MLS Cup victory in 2023 and also clinched the Leagues Cup last year, earning him the title of MLS coach of the year. This year, his Crew side finished seventh in the Eastern Conference and twelfth overall. His tenure in North America spans 215 games, with the Celtic role marking his first managerial position in Europe.

Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell commented on the appointment, highlighting Nancy as a manager whose record “demonstrates the kind of football which we know Celtic supporters love to see.” Lawwell also offered “sincere thanks to Martin, Shaun and our backroom team” for their “tremendous job in stabilising the team and restoring a real level of confidence.” Millenium TV understands that Chief Executive Michael Nicholson affirmed Nancy had been “our number one candidate when we began the process and we are delighted that he has agreed to join the club.” Principal shareholder Dermot Desmond added that they believe they have brought “a hugely talented manager to the club” who “absolutely understands the demands at Celtic.”
