As Russian forces steadily advance into Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, the last operational train station on the western border has become a critical lifeline for civilians and soldiers seeking refuge from the intensifying conflict. This strategic area, which Russian President Vladimir Putin claims in its entirety, is witnessing a significant escalation in hostilities, leading to widespread evacuations.
Putin has recently expressed increased confidence, particularly following the apparent leak of US proposals aimed at ending the war, which many observers believe align closely with his maximalist demands. In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently highlighted territorial integrity as the most challenging aspect of US-led peace discussions.
At the final rail hub, soldier Andrii bid farewell to his girlfriend, Polina, before returning to the front. When questioned about ongoing peace talks, which have reportedly involved discussions between Donald Trump’s envoys and Ukrainian negotiators before moving to Moscow, Andrii dismissed them as “chatter, just chatter,” expressing little hope for a swift end to the conflict.
Skepticism regarding peace efforts is widespread among soldiers. Many, exhausted from relentless fighting, are taking brief 20-day leaves. Soldier Denys, a two-year veteran of the Ukrainian army, firmly believes that the Donbas region must not be surrendered to Russia in any peace agreement. Russian forces currently control approximately 85% of the Donbas, encompassing both Luhansk and Donetsk. While Russian authorities claimed the capture of the strategically vital town of Pokrovsk in Donetsk on Tuesday, Ukraine maintains that fierce fighting continues in the city.
Denys described the dire conditions, stating that “everyone’s drained, everyone’s tired mentally and physically.” His unit has been engaged in combat in the beleaguered city of Kostyantynivka, where drones are a constant threat, flying “like flies.” Despite the terror, Denys affirmed the unwavering resolve of his comrades. “Nobody will give Putin the Donbas. No way, it’s our land,” he emphasized.
The prospect of ceding territory, particularly the “fortress belt” cities of Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, and Druzhkivka, home to at least a quarter of a million Ukrainians, remains largely unacceptable to the Ukrainian populace. Ukraine has fiercely defended these crucial strategic hubs, including Pokrovsk, for over a year. However, US officials reportedly believe Ukraine is currently both outnumbered and outgunned.
Amidst the diplomatic maneuvering, a continuous exodus of civilians from the Donbas persists. Millenium TV observed dozens of individuals, both young and old, arriving daily at a reception center just across the border in Lozova. Many leverage heavy fog to escape, reducing the risk of drone targeting. Approximately 200 people arrive at this facility each day, receiving essential supplies and financial aid.
Yevheniy and his wife Maryna, who recently arrived from Kramatorsk with their two children, highlighted the increased danger. Maryna noted “more drones now,” making it “harder and harder to even go outside. Everything is dangerous,” adding, “Even going to the shop, you might not come back.” The family intends to relocate to Kyiv, with Yevheniy expressing little faith in peace talks, believing Russia “won’t agree to our terms.”
Yet, a contrasting sentiment emerges among some who appear more willing to contemplate permanent relocation in exchange for peace. Oleksandr, whose children are already in Germany, considers it too perilous to remain. While he describes Russia’s maximalist demands as “probably unacceptable,” he indicated a personal willingness to accept some elements of a leaked peace plan, which suggested the de facto handover of Ukrainian-controlled Donbas areas to Russia. “Personally I would agree to those terms,” he stated.
Similarly, Inna, fleeing with her five children aged nine months to 12 years, believes a deal is necessary. She could no longer shield her children from the dangers in Kramatorsk, resorting to telling them explosions were merely fireworks. “The main thing is that there will be peace,” Inna declared, confirming her readiness to abandon her home if it means an end to the conflict. She and her family are already planning to rebuild their lives elsewhere.
The strains of war have also led to a significant increase in desertions among soldiers. Nearly 300,000 cases of desertion or absent without official leave have been recorded since the full-scale Russian invasion, with numbers escalating dramatically over the past year. One such individual, identified as Serhii to protect his identity, is currently in hiding. He volunteered for service earlier this year, unlike many in his unit who were forcibly mobilized.
Serhii claims his unit, already understaffed, was sent to the front near Pokrovsk without adequate training or equipment, describing his experience as being “in a battalion where everything was a mess,” though he believes this was an anomaly. He deserted in May after two friends went AWOL, stating, “I wouldn’t have gone if we had proper leadership and someone experienced in charge… I came to serve, not to run.” Serhii, still contemplating his next steps, echoes recent warnings that Ukraine faces daunting odds in the conflict. He voiced doubt about Ukraine’s ability to win, reasoning, “If you think logically, no. A country of 140 million against us with 32 million – logically it doesn’t add up.”
