F1 Championship Fury: Norris, Verstappen, Piastri in Historic Three-Way Title Fight to the Finish

The 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ championship is poised for a thrilling conclusion, with a rare three-way battle for the title heading into the final race of the season. Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri are all vying for the coveted crown.

British driver Norris currently holds a 12-point advantage over Red Bull’s Verstappen, who is attempting to secure an unprecedented fifth consecutive championship. Piastri, Norris’s McLaren teammate, is a further four points adrift. Both McLaren drivers are seeking their maiden Formula 1 title, adding significant tension to the upcoming decider.

Millenium TV understands that such a close contest, involving three drivers with a mathematical chance of winning the championship in the final race, is a rare occurrence in the sport’s history. Several memorable instances from past seasons highlight the drama and unpredictability of these ultimate showdowns.

**1950: Farina Claims Inaugural Title**

The very first Formula 1 World Championship in 1950 saw Alfa Romeo teammates Juan Manuel Fangio, Giuseppe Farina, and Luigi Fagioli battle it out at Monza, Italy. Despite Fangio leading by four points going into the race, mechanical issues ended his challenge. Farina capitalized on this, winning the race and securing the championship, with Fagioli finishing third in both the race and overall standings. Fangio later became an F1 legend with five titles.

**1959: Brabham’s Incredible Finish**

In 1959, Australian Jack Brabham arrived at the United States Grand Prix in Sebring, Florida, leading the standings, with Britons Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks also in contention. Moss retired early with a gearbox issue. Brabham led for most of the race but famously ran out of fuel on the final lap. While Brooks passed him for third, Brabham heroically pushed his Cooper across the finish line to take fourth place, securing his first of three world titles in the first rear-engined F1 car.

**1964: Surtees Makes History**

John Surtees achieved the unique distinction of winning world titles on both two and four wheels in 1964. Heading into the Mexican Grand Prix, Surtees trailed fellow Englishman Graham Hill by five points, with Scot Jim Clark also in the mix. Clark, who dominated the race, was forced to retire on the last lap due to an oil leak. Ferrari team orders allowed Surtees to move into second place, securing the championship by a single point from Hill.

**1981: Piquet’s Las Vegas Triumph**

The 1981 Caesars Palace Grand Prix, held on a temporary circuit in a hotel parking lot in Las Vegas, hosted a championship decider between Carlos Reutemann, Nelson Piquet, and Jacques Laffite. Pole-sitter Reutemann surprisingly dropped down the field during the race. Despite struggling with heat exhaustion, Brazilian Piquet finished fifth, earning the crucial points needed to edge out Reutemann for the title.

**1986: Mansell’s Tyre Disaster**

The 1986 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide saw Nigel Mansell needing only a third-place finish to win the championship. He was comfortably in position behind teammate Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost when, with 19 laps remaining, his left rear tyre dramatically exploded on the Brabham Straight. This incident, which saw Piquet also make a precautionary tyre change, allowed Prost to win the race and secure back-to-back championships, leaving Mansell to wait until 1992 for his own title.

**2007: Raikkonen’s Comeback Shocks Hamilton**

Lewis Hamilton’s rookie season in 2007 should have culminated in a world title, but a late-season collapse saw him miss out. After winning in Japan, the young Briton held a 12-point lead over McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso and a 17-point lead over Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen with two races to go. Hamilton slid off in China and then suffered a hydraulic issue in Brazil, ultimately finishing seventh. Raikkonen, by winning the final two races, sensationally clinched the title.

**2010: Vettel’s Strategic Victory**

The 2010 season finale in Abu Dhabi involved a four-way fight, though realistically three, between Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, and Sebastian Vettel. Alonso led the standings, but a crucial strategic error by Ferrari saw him make an early pit stop to cover Webber, leaving him stuck behind Vitaly Petrov. This allowed Vettel, who won the race from pole, to snatch the championship. It marked the first time the Red Bull driver had led the championship all year, a feat Max Verstappen aims to replicate this Sunday.

As the sport looks ahead to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Millenium TV will provide comprehensive coverage of what promises to be an unforgettable conclusion to the 2025 Formula 1 season.
