BCB warns Tanzim Sakib for misogynistic Facebook posts

Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Tuesday that they have warned Tanzim Sakib and asked him not to post anything on social media that will hurt public sentiment.

Tanzim, who made a remarkable debut against India in the recently concluded Asia Cup, was embroiled in a controversy after his misogynistic social media posts condemning working women came to light.

Tanzim, who played 12 first-class matches in his short senior career after helping Bangladesh win the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after his post hurt public sentiments to a great extent and raised quite a few eyebrows for his religious belief.

“If the wife works, the husband’s rights are not ensured. If the wife works, the child’s rights are not ensured. If the wife works, her elegance is damaged,” Tanzim posted on Facebook last year.

Tanzim had stated that their sons would not have a ‘modest’ mother if men married ‘a woman who is accustomed to free mixing with her male friends in a university’ in another post, and both these posts went viral hours after he made a noteworthy debut against India.

A BCB official said that the latest development regarding Tanzim came to their attention and they spoke to him in this regard. He also added that as there is a World Cup coming up, they are not doing anything apart from giving him a warning but he won’t be spared if he’s found guilty in the future.

“We had a discussion with Tanzim Sakib and wanted to know about the Facebook post and he said that he did not post it to hurt anyone, rather he posted for his own self and even if it hurt someone, he is sorry for that,” BCB’s cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.

“There is something regarding women and he said that he is taking all the responsibility for it and he insisted that the public assumption that he hates women is totally false because he said his mother is a woman so how could he hate women,” he said.

“He said he was sorry. We have warned him so that he does not put up such posts in the future and he said he will remain away from making such kind of comments.

“This is very important (what kind of mindset he is carrying) and we will keep an eye on him and monitor him. His family is very scared and did not expect this kind of a situation. We have a World Cup coming up and he is a young boy. We have warned him, but in the future, if he does something like this, we will take action against him.”

Jalal said that he had deleted all the posts and added that BCB is ready to give psychological help to him if it is required.

“He deleted his post and he has said everything on his own (rather than being influenced by someone) and that is why we are saying that we will monitor him. He has given an apology and we will talk with him and if he does have any problems, we will come forward to help him. If he requires (psychological) help, we will provide him for that support as well,” said Jalal.

“We feel that we will not face such kind of problem in the future. They have a contract and national team players have a code of conduct (that they need to follow) and we have informed him about all these things and he said he will be careful in this regard and he regretted his action.”
