Ethiopian PM Abiy Demands Red Sea Access Amid Rising Tensions with Neighbours

In recent developments in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has publicly demanded access to the Red Sea for Ethiopia, underscoring the strategic importance of maritime routes for his landlocked country. This call is set against a backdrop of escalating tensions with neighbouring countries that border the Red Sea.

Ethiopia, which lost its direct coastline when Eritrea gained independence in 1993, has since sought ways to secure port access to bolster its trade and economic growth. Prime Minister Abiy’s demand reflects longstanding aspirations to regain a foothold along the Red Sea, which serves as a critical artery for shipping and international trade.

However, this move is being met with resistance from the coastal states surrounding the Red Sea, including Eritrea, Djibouti, and Sudan. These countries have emphasized that the governance and control of the Red Sea should remain under the authority of the coastal nations, citing security and sovereignty concerns. The Red Sea is a vital corridor for global energy supplies and international maritime traffic, making control over it a sensitive issue.

Complicating matters further, the region is witnessing an escalation of fighting in northern Ethiopia, particularly in the Tigray region. The conflict has drawn in neighbouring countries and heightened regional instability, prompting fears of a broader geopolitical crisis. The violence has disrupted trade routes and humanitarian aid delivery, intensifying the urgency for secure and stable access points for Ethiopia and its neighbours.

Ethiopia’s push for Red Sea access is not just about economic interests but also national security and regional influence. The landlocked nation relies heavily on the ports of Djibouti and Eritrea for the majority of its imports and exports. Any restriction or disruption of these supply lines severely impacts Ethiopia’s economy and its ability to sustain its population.

Neighbouring countries warn that any attempt by Ethiopia to assert control or obtain a special status on the Red Sea without multilateral agreements risks escalating conflicts further. There have been ongoing talks facilitated by regional organizations and international mediators aimed at de-escalating tensions and seeking collaborative management solutions for the Red Sea.

Analysts note that the Red Sea’s future governance will likely require a delicate balance between recognizing the rights of coastal states and accommodating the economic needs of landlocked countries like Ethiopia. The international community has expressed concern over the rising conflict and the potential for disruption to one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.

The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation and ensure that access to the Red Sea can be managed peacefully. Prime Minister Abiy’s demand highlights the broader challenges facing the Horn of Africa – a region marked by complex historical grievances, strategic competition, and a pressing need for cooperative security arrangements.

As tensions continue to simmer, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that maintains peace, promotes regional development, and ensures that access to the Red Sea benefits all countries involved without compromising security or sovereignty.
