UNRWA Chief Condemns Israeli Seizure of East Jerusalem Training Centre

The chief of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has strongly condemned the recent Israeli seizure of a training centre in East Jerusalem. Christian Saunders, the commissioner-general of UNRWA, described the raid as a calculated move to undermine the agency’s efforts and to erode the rights of Palestinians living in the occupied territories.

According to Saunders, the Israeli authorities’ actions are part of a broader campaign aimed at weakening UNRWA’s operational capacity and dismantling its support infrastructure in Palestinian areas. The agency, which has been providing humanitarian aid, education, and social services to Palestinian refugees for decades, faces increasing challenges due to political pressures and restrictions imposed by Israeli security measures.

The East Jerusalem training centre, recently seized in a forceful Israeli raid, served as a critical location for vocational training and education programs aimed at empowering Palestinian youth and enhancing their employment prospects. The confiscation of this facility not only disrupts these essential services but also symbolizes a broader attempt to diminish Palestinian presence and institutional functionality in East Jerusalem.

UNRWA officials highlight that the raid violates international law and United Nations resolutions that protect the rights and properties of Palestinians in occupied territories. They call on the international community to intervene and ensure the restoration of the facility and safeguard UNRWA’s operations in the region.

Palestinian leaders and human rights organizations have also condemned the Israeli move, labeling it an attempt to further restrict Palestinian freedoms and limit access to critical resources. They warn that such actions exacerbate tensions and hinder prospects for peace in the region.

The Israeli government, however, maintains that the raid was a necessary security measure, claiming that the training centre was being used for activities deemed illegal by Israeli law. This rationale has been met with skepticism by international observers, who argue that it reflects a pattern of punitive measures targeting Palestinian institutions and communities.

Christian Saunders emphasized the importance of UNRWA’s role in supporting vulnerable Palestinian populations and called for greater international support to protect the agency’s mandate. He stressed the need for a coordinated response to counteract efforts to undermine Palestinian rights and to promote stability and development in the region.

The incident has reignited debates on the status of East Jerusalem, a highly contested area claimed by both Israel and Palestine. The international community has long considered East Jerusalem as occupied territory, and actions such as this seizure are seen as provocations that hinder peace negotiations.

In summary, the Israeli seizure of the East Jerusalem training centre is viewed by UNRWA and many global actors as a serious violation of Palestinian rights and an attempt to weaken an essential humanitarian agency. It underscores the ongoing complexities and tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and highlights the urgent need for renewed efforts towards a peaceful resolution and respect for international law.
