Syrian Army Intensifies Strikes Against Kurdish Fighters in Aleppo

The Syrian army has significantly ramped up its military operations against Kurdish fighters in the city of Aleppo, particularly focusing on the Sheikh Maqsoud neighbourhood. This escalation comes amid ongoing tensions and conflict in the region, with the Syrian government forces aiming to regain control over strategic parts of the city currently held by Kurdish groups.

Sheikh Maqsoud, a predominantly Kurdish neighborhood in Aleppo, has been a focal point of intense clashes between the Syrian army and Kurdish fighters. The area, which has seen periodic conflict, is critical for controlling access within Aleppo and serves as a key territorial stronghold for Kurdish forces.

The intensified strikes reflect the Syrian army’s broader strategy to reclaim areas in Aleppo, a major urban center that has experienced protracted fighting since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. The government’s offensive includes targeted artillery bombardments and ground operations designed to weaken Kurdish defenses and reassert control.

Residents of Sheikh Maqsoud have reported increased shelling and street fighting, leading to significant disruption of daily life and concerns over civilian safety. Many have taken refuge in safer parts of Aleppo or fled the city entirely due to the escalating violence.

The Syrian army’s actions are seen as part of efforts to consolidate power and eliminate Kurdish autonomy in the region, which Kurdish groups have sought to maintain since the conflict began. This military campaign could have broader implications for the stability of northern Syria, particularly given the complex alliances and external interests involved in the conflict.

International observers express concern over the humanitarian impact of the intensified fighting, urging all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and seek a peaceful resolution. However, the situation remains volatile, with no immediate signs of de-escalation.

The conflict in Aleppo is part of the larger Syrian civil war, which has led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions since 2011. Control of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and economic hub before the war, remains a key objective for all factions involved.

As the Syrian army continues its operations in Sheikh Maqsoud, the outcome of these confrontations will be critical in shaping the future control of Aleppo and the wider region. The increased military presence and strikes underscore the government’s determination to reestablish authority and curtail Kurdish military influence within the city.
