UK Slams Prolonged Gaza Aid Delays as Crucial Shelter Finally Arrives After Year-Long Wait

The United Kingdom government has issued strong criticism regarding significant delays in humanitarian aid reaching Gaza, following the arrival of over 1,100 tents that took more than a year to reach the strip after being dispatched. Millenium TV has learned that the Foreign Secretary has also raised concerns that other UK-funded assistance has been unable to reach residents, despite the ongoing ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.

Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, emphasized the “dire” conditions in Gaza. The United Nations warns that 1.5 million people are in urgent need of shelter as winter approaches, bringing worsening rains and plummeting temperatures. The recently arrived tents, each capable of housing a family of five, reached Gaza on Monday, with additional consignments anticipated this week. These provisions are expected to offer shelter to as many as 12,000 individuals through the colder months.

Cooper asserted that the continued delays in aid access are unacceptable, advocating for the opening of all crossings into the territory to ensure unhindered humanitarian delivery. “The situation in Gaza remains dire,” she explained, “with worsening weather conditions compounding the critical issues caused by damaged infrastructure and over two years of conflict.” She added, “Parents have been trying to shelter their children under broken roofs and open skies. These tents will provide a lifeline to thousands of people needing shelter, protecting them from the cold winds and relentless rain turning rubble into mud.”

Approximately 1.9 million people in Gaza, representing nearly 90% of the population, have been displaced since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October 2023. While welcoming the arrival of the aid, Cooper stressed it was merely a preliminary step towards the “badly needed” major reconstruction. She expressed frustration over earlier incidents where “yet another consignment of aid stuck at the border” was observed. “This cannot be allowed to continue,” she stated, noting that “The arrival of these tents shows the scale of potential impact when our aid gets in, and we will continue to do all we can to urge unhindered humanitarian access, the opening of all the crossings, the implementation of the peace plan, and a path to peace.”

Jonathan Veitch, Unicef Special Representative to the State of Palestine, commented that the arrival of the tents “represents months of ongoing work by the international community to push for greater aid access.” He described the situation in Gaza as “devastating as cold, and heavy rains continue to affect families living in extremely difficult conditions.” Veitch also highlighted that “Even with the ceasefire, daily life remains incredibly challenging for children in the Gaza Strip. UK aid–supported tents have now entered Gaza and will provide urgently needed shelter to help families face the harsh winter. Much more is needed.”
