Massachusetts woman, 84, injured during fall while hiking in western Maine

WELD, Maine — An 84-year-old woman from Massachusetts suffered a head injury Friday from a fall she took while hiking a trail on the southeast side of Tumbledown Mountain in Franklin County.

Maine Game Wardens and emergency officials from several local agencies responded around 4 p.m. to a call requesting help for a woman who fell and became injured while hiking Parker Ridge Trail with a friend, a spokesperson with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said Saturday in a news release.

Donna Hobart of Springfield, Massachusetts, was located by first responders with the Weld Fire Department, who hiked up the trail and assessed her condition.

“It was determined that Hobart could walk down the trail with some assistance,” the release stated.

Several agencies helped Hobart down the trail until she was transported by the Warden Service on an ATV the final half-mile to the trailhead.

Maine Game Wardens and Weld Fire Department were also assisted by Wilton Fire Department and a volunteer with Franklin Search and Rescue.

Parker Ridge Trail is described by the Appalachian Mountain Club’s “Maine Mountain Guide” book as one of the oldest trails on Tumbledown Mountain that brings hikers up the southeast side of the mountain to Tumbledown Pond. The trail includes a small brook crossing, followed by a relatively steep ascent.

AllTrails describes the route as “challenging,” with an elevation gain of nearly 2,000 feet.

The woman’s condition or extent of injury were not disclosed in the release.
