FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Delayed construction cleanup near the George Washington Parkway caused commuters major delays in both Virginia and Maryland on Wednesday morning.
Both the Southbound and Northbound lanes on I-495 were closed leading to the American Legion Bridge due to crews’ cleanup efforts. Commuters in McClean experienced traffic for hours throughout the morning.
Inner Loop delays began before VA-123, while Outer Loop delays began in Maryland before MD-190.
Outer Loop congestion was only made worse when a tractor-trailer became disabled on the American Legion Bridge at about 8:15 a.m. The three left lanes were blocked, with only one right lane and merge lane open.
Delays began before the I-95 Interchange in Prince George’s County.
Commuters were not given full access to the American Legion Bridge until lanes cleared at around 10:48 a.m. Delays began near MD-355 and remained even after lanes reopened and the disabled tractor-trailer was cleared.
Though cleanup efforts and construction in the Inner Loop cleared up at around 8:30 a.m., a truck crash near Exit 25 in Prince George’s County again caused lane closures. Delays at 9:15 a.m. spanned about 1.5 miles and extended on I-95 at around MD-212.
Delays due to the crash began to dissipate a few minutes before 10:10 a.m., according to MATOC Alerts on X, formerly Twitter.
Soon after 11 a.m., another truck became disabled – this time, on I-495 Southbound (Inner Loop) at Exit 23 in Prince George’s County. Delays began just before the I-95 interchange. Extended closures were expected.
