Two women killed in crash on Highway 77 in eastern Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Two Nebraska women were killed after a collision with a semi in north Wahoo on Wednesday.

First responders were called out to the intersection of Road 16 and Highway 77 around 2:20 p.m. They found a two-vehicle crash between a semi and Chevy Equinox.

An investigation showed that the Equinox was traveling north on Road 16 and failed to yield at the intersection. It was then struck by an eastbound semi on the highway, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The driver and passenger inside the Equinox were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as 82-year-old Lucretia Griffen, of Ames, and 71-year-old Nancy Page, of Fremont. A spokesman with NSP said that three cats inside the Equinox did survive the crash.

The semi driver was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

This intersection has been the site of multiple fatal crashes over the last few years, including a 2021 crash that killed three siblings, an 18-year-old, 11-year-old and 7-year-old.

Following that crash, and a previous deadly crash in 2020, the Wahoo community called for changes to be made and Nebraska Department of Transportation made temporary changes in November 2022. NDOT then held open houses in April 2023 regarding their plan to build a roundabout at the intersection starting this spring.
