Michigan DL Coach Greg Scruggs Resigns After Arrest on OWI Charge

Michigan Wolverines defensive line coach Greg Scruggs has resigned from his position with the program following his arrest on an OWI charge, head coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement Thursday.

“I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately,” Moore said, per Zach Shaw of CBS and 247Sports. “I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.”

Scruggs was hired by Michigan this month to join a revamped defensive coaching staff for the Wolverines under Moore, who was hired as head coach after Jim Harbaugh became head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in January.

The 33-year-old was arrested in Ann Arbor on Saturday on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Hours after the arrest became public, Moore said in a statement that Scruggs had been suspended indefinitely pending a review.

“Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated,” Moore said, per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. “He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while we review details of the incident.”

In Michigan, an OWI charge has penalties “of up to 93 days in jail, a $500 fine and six months’ suspended license,” per Rittenberg.

Prior to being hired by Michigan, Scruggs spent the 2023 season coaching Wisconsin’s defensive line. He served as an assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets in 2022.

The Cincinnati native was a defensive lineman at Louisville and was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2012 draft. He spent five years in the NFL, also suiting up for the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears.

Scruggs was a member of Seattle’s Super Bowl 48-winning squad and New England’s Super Bowl 51-winning team.
