Sri Lanka’s night of agony
55 by Sri Lanka is the fourth lowest total in all World Cup games and the lowest ever by a Full Member nation, the previous lowest being 58 by Bangladesh against West Indies in Mirpur in 2011.
It is the second lowest all-out total against India in all ODIs behind 50 by Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final in Colombo in September. It is the third lowest all out total for Sri Lanka in all ODIs and the fourth instance of them getting bowled out for under 80 in 2023.
4 Instances of a team winning by 300+ run margin – all four coming in the year 2023 alone. It is the second instance of the ill fate dawning on Sri Lanka after their 317-run defeat against India in Thiruvananthapuram in January.
2 runs The aggregate by Sri Lanka’s top five batters – the lowest in an ODI innings. The previous lowest being four runs by Canada against Netherlands in King City in 2013.
5 Sri Lankan batters getting dismissed without scoring, the eighth such instance in World Cup contests. This is the third such instance by a Full Member nation after England against West Indies in the final of 1979 and Sri Lanka against India in Johannesburg in 2003.
4 Instances of both openers getting dismissed for golden ducks, three of the four coming in World Cups. The previous instances were Piet Rinke and Terry Duffin against West Indies in 2006, Lahiru Thirimanne and Tillakaratne Dilshan against Afghanistan in 2015 and Colin Munro and Martin Guptill against West Indies in 2019.
Indian bowlers scale new heights
45 wickets for Mohammed Shami makes him the highest wicket taker for India in World Cups, going past Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan. This was Shami’s third five-wicket haul in World Cups equalling Mitchell Starc for the record in the tournament and fourth in all ODIs; Srinath and Harbhajan Singh have three each.
6 Wickets taken by India in the first ten overs – the joint most for them in an ODI equaling six against the same opponent in their most recent meeting in the Asia Cup final in Colombo in last September (where ball by ball data available). They have taken five wickets or more in this phase five times in ODIs of which four have happened in the last 18 months and three in 2023 alone, all against Sri Lanka.
Indian batters pile records
357/8 by India is the highest team total in World Cups without an individual century bettering 348/8 by Pakistan against England in Nottingham in the 2019 edition. Three Indian batters got dismissed between 80 and 99 which makes it the second such instance in ODIs after Sri Lanka against Pakistan in Mohali in 1997.
3 Indian batters surpassing Sri Lanka’s total of 55 – Shubman Gill 92, Virat Kohli 88, and Shreyas Iyer 82. It is only the third instance in ODIs where three batters from one team topped the opposition total (completed innings only) after Australia against Namibia in Potchefstroom in World Cup 2003 and South Africa against Sri Lanka in Paarl in 2012.
8 Instances of Virat Kohli aggregating 1000+ ODI runs in a calendar year – the most such instances for a player in the format surpassing Sachin Tendulkar who did it on seven occasions.
5/80 by Dilshan Madushanka is the second most expensive five-wicket haul in all ODIs behind Adil Rashid’s 5/85 against West Indies in St George’s in 2019. The previous most expensive in World Cups was Mustafizur Rahman’s 5/75 against Pakistan at Lord’s in the 2019 edition.
