Stable Afghanistan Post-9/11 Key to US Interests, Says Former Diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad

Former U.S. diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad has emphasized the importance of a stable Afghanistan following the events of 9/11, highlighting that such stability is crucial to the strategic interests of the United States. In a detailed discussion, Khalilzad pointed out that Washington’s primary objective is to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a stronghold for groups that oppose U.S. interests.

Khalilzad, who has played a pivotal role in U.S. diplomatic efforts in the region, noted that the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001, reshaped the U.S. approach towards Afghanistan. The U.S. was committed to dismantling terrorist networks like Al-Qaeda and ensuring that Afghan territory would not be used to launch attacks against the United States or its allies.

Afghanistan, a country long plagued by internal conflict and instability, has often been referred to as a haven for extremist groups. Khalilzad argues that American efforts have been aimed at not only securing the country but also fostering governance and development to undercut the appeal of insurgent groups.

He underscored that a stable Afghanistan serves a dual purpose—it enhances regional security and prevents the resurgence of jihadist groups that could endanger American and global security.

Furthermore, Khalilzad stressed the importance of international cooperation in achieving lasting peace in Afghanistan. While the U.S. has led many initiatives, the involvement of regional players and Afghan stakeholders is critical too.

The former diplomat recounted the challenges faced during peace negotiations and engagements with the Taliban and other factions, cautioning that progress requires patience and persistent dialogue.

He also highlighted the human aspect, mentioning that stability would improve living conditions for millions of Afghans, allowing for educational opportunities, economic growth, and the rebuilding of infrastructure.

Zalmay Khalilzad’s insights offer a window into the long-term strategic thinking guiding U.S. policy in Afghanistan. The path forward, as he sees it, involves balancing military, diplomatic, and humanitarian efforts to ensure Afghanistan does not revert to a breeding ground for terrorism.

In conclusion, the former diplomat’s statements reaffirm that a stable Afghanistan remains a cornerstone of U.S. national security interests, making continued engagement and support an essential element of American foreign policy.
