Understanding Africa’s True Size: Why the UN Voted to Change the World Map

Africa’s vast size has long been underestimated due to traditional world maps, notably the Mercator projection. This map, designed by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was crucial for navigation but distorts the relative sizes of continents and countries. Near the poles, landmasses appear significantly larger, while near the equator, they seem smaller than their actual size.

Africa, which straddles the equator, suffers from this distortion. It appears far smaller on the Mercator map than it really is. In reality, Africa is enormous — it covers about 30.37 million square kilometers, making it the second-largest continent after Asia.

To put this into perspective, Africa is larger than the combined areas of the United States, China, India, and most of Europe. However, the Mercator projection often leads to misconceptions about the true scale of African countries and continents, impacting everything from education to geopolitics.

In recognition of these distortions, the United Nations recently voted to adopt a new world map projection that better represents the true sizes of countries and continents. This new map enlarges regions such as Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Oceania, giving viewers a truer sense of their scale.

This change is more than just a correction of geography; it is also about representation and perception. The distorted Mercator map has historically minimized developing regions by shrinking their visual footprint, which influences global awareness and perceptions of importance and impact.

The new projection aims to address these issues by presenting a more equitable view of the world. It challenges the Eurocentric bias inherent in the Mercator map and promotes a better understanding of global diversity in geography.

Beyond geography, the map change has educational implications. Students around the world will now learn a more accurate spatial awareness of continents and countries, helping combat misconceptions rooted in outdated maps.

In addition to Africa, countries in Latin America and regions in South Asia and Oceania also appear larger and more influential on the new map. This serves to acknowledge the economic and cultural significance of these regions on the global stage.

The transition to a new map is part of evolving efforts in cartography to use technology and data to create more accurate and fair representations of the world. It reflects a growing understanding of the impact maps have on how societies perceive themselves and others.

Maps are powerful tools — they shape our worldview and inform decisions on everything from diplomacy to education. By adopting a map that better reflects real-world sizes, the UN is fostering a more inclusive and truthful global perspective.

In summary, Africa is truly immense, far larger than its conventional depiction on older maps. The UN’s decision to update world maps responds to the need for accuracy and fairness in how the world is portrayed. This change benefits not only the regions whose sizes are adjusted but also anyone seeking to understand our world with greater clarity and fairness.
